A mixture of communities in South Brooklyn meets in Mapleton. North of Bensonhurst, the neighborhood has historically been home to Italian immigrants as well as Orthodox Jewish and Hasidic residents. As the area has evolved, Asian grocery stores have opened in the neighborhood, along with Chinese restaurants on 18th Avenue. Large multi-family brick homes from the 1920s and 30s are found throughout, as well as a few modern mid-rise condo buildings. South of Borough Park, Mapleton has a sense of historic charm, good schools, and transportation options that set it apart.

Large historic homes and newer condos
Blocks of prewar mid-rises share space with large Queen Anne Victorian homes and brick Greek revival attached rowhouses featuring period details such as dripstone cornices. Homes are priced similarly to adjacent areas, where a two-story brick house or a large Tudor revival rowhouse might cost $1.8 million. Newer condos are rising, offering one-bedroom units for $500,000. “Like everywhere in New York City, this part of Brooklyn is always changing, which is exciting if you’re open to it,” says Jerry Minsky, a Brooklyn native and real estate agent with Douglas Elliman who has been selling in Brooklyn for over 30 years. “Neighborhoods like Mapleton have become more popular,” he says.
Family-owned restaurants and kosher grocery stores
Mapleton’s melting pot status is evident in its dining options. Italian fare is served up at the cozy Ortobello’s and at the neighborhood mainstay, J & V Pizzeria, which has been serving pies since 1950. Traditional Balkan pastries can be found at Djerdan Burek and the family-run Si n'shpi offers Albanian cuisine. The northwestern side of Mapleton has a large kosher grocery store and several kosher delis. Fresh produce and meats can be found at NetCost Market and a nearby Target offers staples.

Roosevelt High School offers a variety of varsity athletic teams and gets a B rating from Niche.
