River North
Fishing, boating and hiking at Mississippi Gateway Regional Park
Mississippi Gateway Regional Park is the neighborhood’s prime asset. The 160-acre riverside park has hiking trails, picnic areas, an off-leash dog park, an archery range and woods teeming with wildlife. Anglers cast lines for smallmouth bass and northern pike from the river’s edge or launch boats from the carry-in access point near the visitor center. Canoe and kayak rentals are available from the Paddle Share Station, and an observation deck offers impressive views of the river and the Coon Rapids Dam. In winter, visitors strap on snowshoes to explore the nature trails. Runners and cyclists can hop on the trailhead for the Rush Creek Regional Trail, a paved multiuse path that stretches nearly 10 miles to the Elm Creek Reserve. Less than a mile from the trailhead, the path swings past the playground, baseball diamond and soccer field at Northern Trail Park.Brooklyn Park Academy is a 2025 Magnet School of Excellence
Most students start at Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy for Math and Environmental Sciences, which receives a Niche grade of A-minus. In 2025, Magnet Schools of America honored the elementary school with its Magnet School of Excellence award in recognition of its high academic standards and diversity efforts. Jackson Middle School receives a B-plus, and Champlin Park High School is rated A-minus.Contemporary homes on the Mississippi River
River North’s looping streets wind past 1970s ranch-style homes and two-story contemporary builds dating to the early 2000s. Most properties measure between one-third and half an acre, with well-manicured yards, plenty of shade and only a handful of sidewalks. Although the neighborhood is exclusively residential, home sales are infrequent. Split-level and ranch-style homes recently sold for $350,000 to $400,000, while contemporary homes fetched $450,000 to $650,000. However, some riverfront properties can go for $800,000 to over $1 million. “Home prices north of the dam are going to be a lot higher because the Mississippi is very clean at that point,” Ekstrom says.Commuting to downtown Minneapolis by car or bus
Minnesota State Highway 252 is about a mile away and offers the best starting point for the 14-mile commute to central Minneapolis. Buses on the Minneapolis Metro Transit System stop on Noble Parkway and West River Road, but many residents rely on cars. Medical services are available from Mercy Hospital Champlin, about 7 miles away, and air travelers have a 26-mile drive to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. West River Road includes a multiuse path that connects with the Rush Creek Regional Trail in a couple of places, allowing walkers and cyclists to access other riverside parks nearby. In late June, locals can hit the trail for the 3-mile ride to River Park Fest. During the one-day event, various Discovery Stations offer nature activities like paddling, birding and fishing.Retail and restaurants at Park Place Promenade
Residents have to travel outside the neighborhood to find retail and restaurant options. The nearest grocery store is Hy-Vee, about 2 miles away near Highway 610. Several shopping centers and fast-food chains can also be found in this area. At Park Place Promenade, hungry shoppers will find several casual dining options, including MC’s Tap House. The bar and grill features an extensive pub-grub menu, offering everything from salads to burgers to flatbread pizza.Weather-related concerns and low crime risk
River North has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1, the lowest possible score. Hail risk in the Twin Cities region is high, so buyers might want to look for homes with garages. Flooding is also a risk due to the neighborhood’s proximity to the Mississippi River.
