Farmland gives way to suburban development outside Minneapolis

Tessman has seen plenty of changes over recent decades. This quiet neighborhood was once a farm operated by the Tessman family, known for producing high-quality potatoes. In the 1990s, development led to subdivisions, bringing plenty of homeowners to the community. Now, it’s seeing more change as homes begin to turn over. “It’s a transitional area. You have some families that have been there a while selling to younger couples,” says John Clay, a broker with Associated Realtors with nearly 40 years of experience. “It’s an affordable area with a lot of four-bedroom, two-bathroom starter homes.” While housing options and affordability are the main draw, according to Clay, the several nearby highways make Tessman an ideal location for buyers who work in the Twin Cities but want a peaceful suburban lifestyle.

Turn-of-the-century homes fill Tessman's streets

Most homes in Tessman are from the 1990s and early 2000s. New Traditional houses make up much of the inventory, but buyers can also find split-levels and ranch-style homes. Front-facing attached garages provide a secure place to store cars and protect them from the cold, snowy winters. Houses are typically close together, but some have spacious lots with room for a backyard playground or small pool. The community also includes some townhouses in the southern end close to 85th Avenue. Homes in Tessman typically range from $300,000 to $480,000.

Sports and relaxation are abundant at Tessman parks

Outdoor recreation is plentiful in Tessman, with three parks in the area. Zane Sports Park is the largest and is constantly hosting sporting events. This expansive complex has eight baseball fields, eight softball fields and several soccer fields. Tessman Acres Park is a small green space tucked behind some of the homes. Multiple walking paths lead to this park, which has a playground, picnic area and open grassy space covered with leafy trees. Indoor recreation is available at Brooklyn Park Activity Center, a large facility with a fitness room, gym, walking track and two ice rinks. The center also has an outdoor playground and skate park.

Conveniently located schools prepare Brooklyn Park students for the future

Edinbrook Elementary School is conveniently located in the community on Zane Avenue and receives a B-minus from Niche. North View Middle School gets a C-plus, while Osseo Senior High School earns a B. The high school serves approximately 2,300 students and offers a health science magnet program and an automotive technology program certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation. North Hennepin Community College is across 85th Avenue from the neighborhood and has approximately 7,200 students. The college is known for its liberal arts, nursing and business programs.

Shopping and dining are a short drive from Tessman

Most of the dining options near Tessman are fast-food or chain restaurants. Taco Bell Defy is a two-story Taco Bell with three drive-through lanes. Food is made in the upper level and delivered to customers through tubes, similar to a bank drive-through. Other options include Raising Cane’s and Panera. MC’s Tap House is a locally owned bar and grill that serves sandwiches, burgers and craft beer. Groceries are available at Hy-Vee or Cub. Target is south of the neighborhood on Broadway and Walmart is on Lakeland Avenue.

Freeways offer easy trips around the Twin Cities

Multiple highways offer a convenient start to any commute throughout the Twin Cities. “You have 610, 169 and all the major freeways. It’s basically an extension of Minneapolis in the northern suburbs,” Clay says. “It’s sort of a bedroom community. A lot of people might work in other areas, but they live in Brooklyn Park.” Downtown Minneapolis is about 14 miles away, while St. Paul can be reached in 23 miles. Public transit is available via Metro Transit routes 722 and 723, connecting to the city of Brooklyn Center and the Target corporate office about 2 miles north of the neighborhood.
