Farmland gives way to suburban development outside Minneapolis
Tessman has seen plenty of changes over recent decades. This quiet neighborhood was once a farm operated by the Tessman family and known for producing high-quality potatoes. In the 1990s, development led to subdivisions, bringing plenty of homeowners to the community. Now, it’s seeing more change as homes begin to turn over. “It’s a transitional area. You have some families that have been there a while selling to younger couples,” says John Clay, a broker with Associated Realtors with nearly 40 years of experience. “It’s an affordable area with a lot of four-bedroom, two-bathroom starter homes.” While housing options and affordability are the main draws, according to Clay, several nearby highways make Tessman an ideal location for buyers who work in the Twin Cities but want a peaceful suburban lifestyle.

Freeways offer easy trips around the Twin Cities
Multiple highways offer a convenient start to any commute throughout the Twin Cities. “You have 610, 169 and all the major freeways. It’s basically an extension of Minneapolis in the northern suburbs,” Clay says. “It’s sort of a bedroom community. A lot of people might work in other areas, but they live in Brooklyn Park.” Downtown Minneapolis is about 14 miles away, while St. Paul can be reached in 23 miles. Public transit is available via Metro Transit routes 722 and 723, connecting to the city of Brooklyn Center and the Target corporate office about 2 miles north of the neighborhood.
