Colored by the warm Kentucky sky and cool, rolling hills, life in Brooks moves at a bit of a slower pace than in Louisville. "It's the kind of place where kids can start their own egg-selling businesses and folks take time to watch the sunrise and sunset, which can always be seen from right on Brooks Hill," says Lindsey Hammons, a lifelong resident and real estate agent who has been selling homes throughout the greater Lousiville and Bullitt County areas since 2017. Bordering the Jefferson Memorial Forest to the west, Brooks is part of Kentucky's Knobs region, which is known for its picturesque, sliding hillsides and lush treescapes. "It has a bit of a Gatlinburg feel," says Hammons, referring to the popular Tennessee destination known for its peaceful hiking and camping. This nature-loving lifestyle, however, isn't all that Brooks offers; just 15 miles south of Louisville and a stone's throw from Shepherdsville, this suburban community surrounded by forested land provides residents with a portal to some of the Bluegrass region’s most well-known cultural points. "People really love that about Brooks," says Hammons, continuing to say that "when people move here, they tend to stay at least 30 or 40 years." With bountiful nature, winding country roads and generous lots that allow for open space and personal recreation, the Brooks community is a small, hometown community where locals can enjoy a quiet country lifestyle just minutes from the big city.

In Brooks' residential areas, spacious, green properties separate many homes and provide enough space for keeping personal gardens and animals, while the houses themselves are pushed away from the neighborhood's calm backroads by extended driveways. Many homes feature wide-open views of their grassy properties, while those to the west back up against the leafy and heavily wooded expanse of Jefferson Memorial Forest. Buyers can find houses smaller than 1,000 square feet, but also ones as large as roughly 6,000 or 7,000 square feet. Depending on factors such as size, location and upkeep, homes in Brooks can run anywhere from around $150,000 dollars to over $1 million. Local connection to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail
One great perk of living in Brooks is its proximity to the Bullitt County Wine, Whiskey & Ale Trail, which connects to the more famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Popular with locals and visitors alike, Brooks is also home to the award-winning Brooks Hill Winery, affectionally called the “little winery up the hill,” one of the stops on the local libations trail. Visitors can not only taste wines like the Dori Roe Red or Lemberger, but can also sit back and enjoy the occasional live music. If they feel more adventurous, they can then make the trek to try out the bourbons and go on tours of the James B. Beam distillery and Four Roses Warehouse & Bottling facility, each of which are part of the Bullitt County and Kentucky Bourbon trails.
In terms of local dining, Brooks locals tout the relatively new El Maguey Mexican Restaurant, which is the only dining estblishment in the neighborhood. Otherwise, those seeking comfort meals can dine at Cracker Barrel or a plethora of other chain options on the other side of the Kentucky Turnpike, "Which is just a hop, skip and jump away," says Hammons. Those cooking at home can pick up groceries from Price Less Foods or Kroger, located on Preston Highway.

Explore the Jefferson Memorial Forest
Brooks sits at the edge of the Jefferson Memorial Forest, which the city of Louisville established in the 1940s as a tribute to military veterans. This natural park, part of which comes into Bullitt County, comprises over 6,600 acres of slopes covered in second-growth hardwood trees. Featuring scenic trails, streams, a fishing lake and even a conference center, the forest is known as the largest municipally-owned urban forest in the United States. Brooks residents can head to Horine Reservation, one of the park's closer sections, for hiking, while Paul Yost Recreation Area is a great spot for horse riding. With a reservation, residents can pack a tent or sleep under the stars at the park's primitive camping sites, which make up for what they lack in potable water or electricity in an abundance of natural beauty. The park's scenery consists of "A mix of rugged hills and steep valleys with creekbeds trickling through their bottoms," says Samantha Satterly, the Guest Services Supervisor at Jefferson Memorial Forest.
For more casual recreational outings, parents can toss the ball around with their children at the Brooks Community Ball Club, while others can squeeze in a few rounds at the Crossings Golf Club. Thrill seekers can take a few laps at Kart Kountry, a seasonal establishment where recreational racers can battle it out on a main track that measures over 1.5 miles. Although it will occasionally open during the colder months, the track normally operates during the summer months. There‘s also a smaller track for children, as well as an arcade, batting cages and bumper boats.
The visitors center at Jefferson Memorial Forest is a good first stop during your visit.
Some find the Paul Yost Recreation Area offers a peaceful escape.

Saturday nights at the Shepherdsville Country Music Show
The Shepherdsville Country Music Show, located right off Kentucky Route 44, is about 8 miles out and a 12-minute drive from Brooks. The venue, a hard-to-miss bright red building, hosts a variety of live entertainment from comedy shows to bands playing classic rock on Saturday nights.

Jefferson County schools with a strong athletic reputation
For primary education, local students attend Brooks Elementary School, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche. The school is centrally located within the community and also recently opened a tee-ball club for its students. Across the Kentucky Turnpike, Hebron Middle School receives a B, while North Bullitt High School earns a C according to Niche. Brooks students are part of Bullitt County Public Schools, which Niche ranks as one of the top 25 districts for athletes in Kentucky.

Located near the bottom of Brooks Hill, Brooks Ball Park is a locally owned lot of land opened by its owners for community use. With a lighted field, bleachers and space for locals to come together, the park is a haven for both sports and social gatherings in the Brooks community. "It's very sweet to see kids playing tee ball," says Hammons, continuing to say that this park "Gives locals a place to talk and communicate, it keeps that sense of unity intact." People from across the Brooks community look forward to movie nights in the park where "There are free hotdogs, and kids can play kickball." Additionally, the park is home to occasional farmers' markets with local, self-owned businesses, artisans and woodworkers in attendance.

Getting around the greater Brooks area
To get most places around Brooks, residents can simply hop on the Kentucky Turnpike (Interstate 65). Positioned between the bustling city energy of Louisville and the charming smalltown vibe of Shepherdsville, Brooks residents can access the best of the Bluegrass Region's entertainment, dining and outdoor recreation either 15 miles to the north in Downtown Louisville, or just 6 miles south in Shepherdsville. Those traveling out of state can head just 11 miles north to find Louisville International Airport. For those working in the area or in need of medical assistance, the University of Louisville Health's South Hospital recently opened just across the turnpike from Brooks and can be found on Hebron Lane.
