Winding country roads go through scenic farmland and woods in Browns Summit, a largely rural community just northeast of Greensboro in Guilford County. In recent years, many new subdivisions have cropped up in Browns Summit. New residents have been attracted to the area thanks to its convenience to Greensboro, quiet atmosphere and lower cost of living compared to the city. “It’s a peaceful environment where you can get away from the city but still not be too far,” says Rebeca de Jesus Bacilio, a local Realtor at Real Broker LLC. “People stay here. They plant roots here.”

Recently built new traditional homes set in farmland

Residential options in Browns Summit largely consist of single-family properties built between the mid-20th century and today. Clusters of developments intermingle with active farmland and more secluded properties on several acres. Several new subdivisions, such as Fairgrove Meadows and Wellington, have spacious traditional-style and Craftsman-inspired homes with two-car garages. Brick ranches and manufactured homes are common among the area’s older residences. The median single-family home price in Browns Summit is $396,000. “Since it’s a growing area, a lot of people are moving here with the expectation that their house value will go up,” Jesus Bacilio says. “You also just have county taxes, you don’t have city taxes, so it’s more affordable with a mortgage payment,” Jesus Bacilio says.

Guilford County Schools have traditional and magnet options

Several schools in the Guilford County School District serve students in Browns Summit. Some children go to Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary School, which has a C-plus grade from Niche, and continue to C-rated Northeast Guilford Middle School and C-plus-rated Northeast Guilford High School. The county also has many choice and magnet schools students can apply to attend. One of these magnet schools is Brown Summit Middle School. This A-rated school is home to the Center for Advanced Academics, which offers high school-level courses and competition teams like Mock Trial and Chess Club.

Sports at Bryan Park and more recreation on Lake Townsend

On the south side of Browns Summit, Bryan Park has two public, 18-hole golf courses and a soccer complex with 20 full-sized fields. The complex hosts youth field hockey and soccer teams, as well as adult lacrosse and soccer. Lake Townsend borders the athletic fields and golf courses. This recreational lake spans over 1,500 acres and has opportunities for hiking around the water and kayaking, sailing and motorized boating. Park visitors can also cast a line from the pier and catch largemouth bass and catfish. Crooked Tree Golf Course is another 18-hole public course in Browns Summit.

Nearby restaurants and local farms serving Browns Summit

The community is home to several farms selling local meats and produce, including Wild Acres Farm and Hopkins Poultry. All in the Family Ice Cream Parlor serves banana splits, smoothies and decadent scoops just off U.S. Highway 29 in Browns Summit. Other local restaurants like Country Kitchen, a diner serving sandwiches and breakfast platters, are nearby off Hicone Road. Hicone Road also has Food Lion, Dollar Tree and chains like Bojangles.

Commuting to Greensboro on the Urban Loop

Residents are about 19 miles northeast of Piedmont Triad International Airport and 13 miles northeast of downtown Greensboro – about a 20-minute drive. The area is also just off the Urban Loop, a beltline surrounding Greensboro. The northern section of the Urban Loop was completed in 2023, better connecting drivers around the city. “Even though you’re in the outskirts, the Urban Loop is a fast and easy way to get to Greensboro,” Jesus Bacilio says. Browns Summit is also about 20 miles northwest of Burlington.
