Witnessing the neighborhood’s evolution
Long-time residents of Brownsville have witnessed the neighborhood evolve over the last few decades. Most modern redevelopment has been fueled by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, bringing brand-new high-rise living and retail opportunities to the area surrounding the Brownsville Metrorail station. This effort has generated new businesses, job growth and even population growth to help create a brighter future for the Brownsville community. Today, the area continues to provide ample living opportunities to South Florida residents looking for a glimpse into some of Miami’s richest African American history.

Homes in the historic hub of Brownsville
Many of Brownsville’s ranch-style homes and cottages have been renovated, but there’s plenty of room for investment in this historic Miami hub. Though brand-new builds are slowly popping up, fixer-uppers with classic Spanish Revival design line these residential streets, ranging in price from $350,000 to $500,000. As part of the neighborhood’s recent resurgence, a number of condominium developments and high-rise apartment towers have been constructed near the metro station. Surrounding them is a sea of pastel homes with fenced-in parking and the occasional carport. The streets are sometimes uneven, and sidewalks aren’t guaranteed, but the residents who call Brownsville home know that the area’s true appeal rests in its history.

Celebrating South Florida’s diverse history
The Historic Hampton House Cultural Center celebrates South Florida’s diverse history through programs and events geared toward culture, music and education. Originally known as the “Social Center of the South,” Hampton House was a hotspot for entertainment in the 1950s and 60s, a green book venue providing African Americans with safe lodging, dining and pertinent information. The center was even featured in the 2020 film “One Night in Miami,” which would go on to earn three Academy Award nominations. Farther north, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center offers high-quality instruction for youth in the performing and visual arts. The center provides art academies for students, apprenticeships and an artist residency program.
