Brunswick is one of the oldest cities along the Georgia coast, serving as an entryway to the state's Golden Isles. It was founded in 1771 and retains its historic feel with 19th-century Victorian homes, original public squares and streets named for British royalty. The longstanding port city connects with popular tourist destinations like St. Simons and Jekyll Islands and is bordered by several marshes, creeks and rivers. "I grew up on the water here," says Brunswick native and local Realtor Susan Owens of Coldwell Banker Access Realty. "Fishing, shrimping, sail-boating and cruising are all big things here. And you can buzz across the causeway and be in St. Simons in no time."
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and a branch of the Southeast Georgia Health System are two of the city's largest employers. "We have a lot of people coming in and out because of the training center, and a lot of the instructors live here permanently," Owens says. The city is also home to a Georgia-Pacific Pulp and Paper Mill. "A lot of people think that Brunswick smells bad because of the paper mill," Owens says. "But I think it just depends on which way the wind is blowing."

Victorian homes downtown and new-builds up north
The median house price in Brunswick was $299,000 in 2024, lower than the national median. Homes here sell after 62 days on the market, slower than the American average of 44 days. The city's 19th and early 20th-century homes are concentrated downtown. These homes are classic 1800s Victorians, bungalows, cottages and four squares. Many of these houses have been remodeled, but several still need repairs. The city's newer, 21st-century housing is subdivided in northern Brunswick. "They have built hundreds of new homes," Owens says, "many of which are ranch-style." Waterfront properties are the city's most expensive, often listing near or above $1 million.

Historic squares and life on the Turtle and East Rivers
According to the Trust for Public Land, 64% of Brunswick residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, and the city features over two dozen parks and squares. Mary Ross Waterfront Park is arguably the city's most popular park because of its location along the East River and the farmers market. Outdoor activities on the water are popular with residents in Brunswick. The Brunswick Landing Marina is a full-service boatyard and yacht club that offers a local jumping-off point to reach the Port of Brunswick. Brunswick Stew in historic downtown
There's some debate about the true origins of Brunswick stew, but the Georgian city claims to be the dish's birthplace. "My office participates in the city's 'Stewbilee' every year," Owens says. "We haven't won the whole thing, but we have won the 'peoples choice' award." Several local restaurants in the Brunswick Old Town Historic District sell the iconic stew – from Hootenanny's at the Yard to Twin Oaks BBQ. Downtown also features several antique shops, clothing boutiques and apothecaries. Big-box retailers and grocery stores are predominantly in Brunswick's north end, also home to the Glynn Place Mall.
The Old Town Historic District is a stage for city events, including First Fridays – a staple event where the city shuts down streets and hosts musicians, a car show and local merchants. The Blessing of the Fleet Festival honors local fishermen at the start of the season with a weekend full of music and food. The Ritz Theater hosts live performances, screenings and art shows.

Home of the Mariners at the College of Coastal Georgia
Glynn County School District scores an overall A-minus on Niche and serves just over 12,800 students. Niche ranks the school district among the top 10 most diverse in Georgia and the top 25 best places to teach. The district's four middle and two high schools score a B or higher on Niche, including the A-rated Glynn Academy. Frederica Academy is a nearby private school option with an A-plus on Niche. Brunswick is a car-dependent city. State Routes 341 and 17 offer quick routes out of the town. The F.J. Torras Causeway cuts over the marshes, heading east into St. Simons Island 6 miles away. Interstate 95 is accessible 6 miles north of Brunswick's heart. The city doesn't have public transportation, but officials have developed a Transit Service Plan to lay the groundwork for a local transit system. Brunswick Golden Isles Airport offers Delta flights to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airport is 9 miles north of the city center.

Every property in Brunswick is susceptible to flooding during a weather event. Much of the city is in an AE Flood Zone, a Special Flood Hazard Area.
