Brunswick offers country living east of the Hudson River

Brunswick is in Rensselaer County, located just east of Troy and roughly 15 miles outside of Albany. Known for its peaceful country setting, the community has rolling hills and wooded backdrops that offer many opportunities for outdoor recreation. At the same time, Brunswick appeals to homebuyers seeking spacious lots without sacrificing proximity to urban amenities and major employment centers. “The town has a beautiful rural setting with farmlands and produce stands, and many homebuyers move to Brunswick from Troy because they want more space and room for their families,” says John Mainello, Brunswick native and Realtor with Heer Realty, who has over 20 years of experience.

Homes in town offer diverse styles and large parcels

Brunswick is set on hilly terrain, with mature trees and dense woodlands dominating the landscape. Neighborhoods closer to Troy have a more traditional feel, with rows of houses set on open lawns and residential streets. Properties in the countryside tend to have more acreage, with greenery and woods serving as natural dividers. Houses were mostly built in the 1900s and early 2000s, though some historical homes can date back to the late 1700s. The area’s diverse housing landscape features a mix of cottages, ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and New Traditional builds. “Inventory is low and homes on the market go fast,” Mainello says. Single-family homes start around $150,000 and can go up to $450,000. Larger country estates may sell between $500,000 and $800,000. Condos and townhouses typically sell from $200,000 to $350,000, and multifamily residences can go between $200,000 and $550,000.

Students are served by multiple school districts

The town is served by multiple school systems, including Troy City, Lansingburgh Central and Brunswick-Brittonkill Central school districts. Most students go to Brunswick-Brittonkill and may start out at Tamarac Elementary School. Then, they continue to Tamarac Middle School and Tamarac High School. All schools have C-plus grades from Niche, and all three share one large campus. The middle and high schools have a ski club, offering about half a dozen ski trips and lessons throughout the year. Hudson Valley Community College is about 10 miles away, offering over 80 degree and certificate programs.

Town and state parks offer year-round recreation

There are plenty of ways to get outside in Brunswick. “Something that people don’t know is when they buy homes in town, residents have access to the Brunswick Town Beach, which is a special recreation space for locals to enjoy," Mainello says. Brunswick Town Park and Beach offers boating, fishing and picnicking. The town also has youth sports programs for baseball, football and soccer. The Country Club of Troy has an 18-hole course, tennis facilities and a social club, open to members only. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the nearby Barberville Falls Preserve, a popular place for dog walking, hiking or snowshoeing along the Falls Trail. Less than 10 miles east of town, Grafton Lakes State Park has six ponds popular for swimming, fishing and boating in the warmer seasons, and ice skating, snowmobiling and ice fishing in the winter.

Many shopping and dining options are along the Route 7 corridor

Brunswick’s west side is home to some popular eateries and shopping options, mostly along state Route 7. Rustic Barn Pub has tavern food, live music and open mic nights, while Zotto’s The Pine serves casual Italian-American fare. Grocery options are located close together, including Aldi, Hannaford and Market 32. There's also a Walmart in the same area. For additional shopping options, locals can visit downtown Troy, less than 10 miles west.

Summer concerts and school events bring the community together

Each summer, the community hosts the Summer Concert Series, featuring live performances by local musicians at Town Park. The Brunswick-Brittonkill school district also has a variety of events and social activities, including a bonfire at Engelke Farm, charity drives and book fairs. Senior citizens are invited to the school to enjoy music and snacks during Tamarac Tunes and Treats, organized by the school's community service club. For bigger celebrations, residents can go to Troy for events like the summer barbecue party, Troy Pig Out, and the Troy Riverfest, featuring live entertainment, chalk art and vendor booths.

Brunswick has easy access to Troy and Albany

New York state routes 2 and 7 pass through town, and both lead to Troy. Albany and Albany International Airport are about 15 miles away, and Samaritan Hospital is about 5 miles away.
