The largest city in Williams County
The City of Bryan, Ohio, is just south of the Toledo Strip, a territory so disputed in the 1800s that Ohio and Michigan shed blood in a year-long conflict known as the Toledo War. Bryan is now better known as the manufacturer of several well-known candies and toys. With fewer than 9,000 residents, Bryan is still the largest city in Williams County and acts as a civic oasis, providing surrounding towns and villages with entertainment, shopping and jobs. These amenities and a sense of community have attracted many people to the area, including those who once left it behind. “A good majority of the people moving in probably grew up here,” says Misty King, a broker with AmeriMade Realty. “They go to college, get a job and then come back to be closer to family.”
When settlers came to Bryan, they discovered a network of underground freshwater springs giving it its nickname, The Fountain City.
Downtown Bryan offers small-town charm filled with boutique shops and restaurants.

Hometown of Dum Dums and the Etch-A-Sketch
Manufacturing is a top industry in Bryan, and several established brands call it home, including Ohio Art Company, creator of the Etch-A-Sketch, and Spangler Candy Company, which produces Dum Dums, marshmallow Circus Peanuts and more candy canes than anywhere else in the world. Other top job creators include Bard Manufacturing, Titan Tire and the Bryan County School District.
The median price for homes in Bryan falls in the mid-$100,000s, less than half the national median price. The town center has several turn-of-the-century Victorian homes, while the south side has centennial Cape Cods. Some of the newest homes are traditional designs on the west side of town.

A city known for its public parks
At over 33 acres, East End Park is one of the city’s largest public parks, featuring pickleball courts, a baseball diamond and the East End Pool. “Bryan is known for its parks,” says King. “Moore Park is probably the one that gets the most foot traffic.” In addition to paved trails, basketball courts and a playground, Moore Park’s pool attracts families for its 90-foot water slide. Nearby is the Imagination Station, a large enclosed playground built to resemble medieval castles and walls.
Bryan's Moore Park is a very social place busy with walkers, runners, bikers, rollerbladers, and disc golfers.

Virtual tours of the Spangler candy factory
At Spangler Candy World, visitors can taste treats, play games and take a virtual factory tour. “The candy museum and our downtown are starting to make Bryan a day-trip destination,” says King. The Bryan Arts and Education Center hosts a variety of performances, including the Fountain City Festival, which brings a Broadway-style musical to the stage every summer. Plans are underway to renovate and update the former school, removing outdated classrooms and giving the center a new coat of paint. Celebrated every June, Day in the Park welcomes the summer with rides, live music, a car show and a fireworks display. Other cultural sites include the Goldsmith Theatre and the Bryan Theatre, which has screened new and classic films since 1940.
In downtown Bryan, Spangler Candy World features interactive video games and offers free admission to everyone.

Local brews at Father John's
Locally owned boutique stores, curio shops and eateries fill the downtown area. Food options run the gamut from familiar franchise restaurants to local favorites like Father John’s — a 19th-century parsonage converted into a microbrewery and diner. Big-box and grocery stores are scattered further along the city’s edges, and the Northtowne Mall in Defiance is a popular spot for retail.
