First-time homebuyers in The Oaks
Centrally located between the twin cities of Bryan and College Station, The Oaks offers convenience to both downtowns in a community centered on an elementary school and a park. The neighborhood's older but well-maintained homes often attract young families looking to put down roots. “It’s an older established neighborhood,” says Anthony Gutierrez, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Brazos Valley who has worked in the area for seven years. “It’s a good area for first-time homebuyers because pricing is still a little on the lower side.”
“Mr. Texas A&M” and Bob Cherry Park
Robert G. Cherry Jr. worked at Texas A&M for more than 40 years, including 23 in the Chancellor’s Office. Known as “Mr. Texas A&M,” he spent much of that time as a lobbyist for the A&M system of universities. Cherry’s legacy can still be found across Texas A&M, but also in the center of The Oaks, where Bob Cherry Park — a community park named in his honor — features a playground and basketball courts, plus a six-hole disc golf course and a trail for walking and jogging.
School's out on certain streets
Ranch homes line the narrow, tree-shaded streets of The Oaks. Oriented around the neighborhood’s park and elementary school, the brick ranchers were mainly built in the late 1960s and ’70s with built-in garages and fenced backyards. Prices range from the mid-$200,000s to $300,000. Though The Oaks is just 2 miles from Texas A&M campus, there are restrictions on student housing. Certain streets have adopted covenants meant to tamp down on student rentals, where no more than two unrelated people can rent a home together. “If I’m showing houses over there, I have to look at the map since it’s just certain streets,” Gutierrez says.
Bryan ISD education
Students in The Oaks start in the heart of the neighborhood at Johnson Elementary School, which received a B grade from Niche. For fifth and sixth grade, kids move onto B-rated Sam Rayburn Intermediate School, followed by B-minus-graded Stephen F. Austin Middle School for seventh and eighth. They then attend Bryan High School, a B-rated school where students can pursue the International Baccalaureate program. Middle schoolers can also apply to A-graded Bryan Collegiate High School, where they can earn their high school diploma and an associate degree simultaneously. The Bryan campus of Blinn College also offers associate degrees, while Texas A&M University — the second-largest college campus in America — sits just under 3 miles away.
Shopping off Briarcrest Drive and University Drive
Residents of The Oaks have plenty of shopping options, the closest being a shopping center off Briarcrest Drive, less than a mile from the neighborhood. A Walmart and a Lowe’s anchor the area, with restaurant options like Chick-fil-A and Panda Express. The Oaks is also just off East 29th Street, with its strip malls and fast-food joints. Residents can take East 29th Street less than a mile to University Drive, lined with businesses including the Gateway Station mall.
Fall football Saturdays at Texas A&M
Fall Saturdays in Bryan-College Station are focused on football. Kyle Field — home of the Texas A&M Aggies — sits a little over 4 miles from The Oaks and seats 102,733. The area around the stadium can get hectic on gamedays, with traffic lining up throughout College Station and Bryan. “University Drive can get bad, but it doesn’t get back into those neighborhoods,” Gutierrez says. “There’s traffic throughout the town but wouldn’t impact that area much.”
Central to both Bryan and College Station
The Oaks is conveniently located near Bryan and College Station. Though the neighborhood sits within the city of Bryan's boundaries, it’s closer to College Station — just over 2 miles, compared to 3.5 to downtown Bryan. The neighborhood also has easy access to Texas Highway 6, the main route through the area. While most people drive, the Green Line of the Brazos Transit District bus system runs along East 29th Street to the neighborhood’s west. For longer trips, residents can take one of the daily hopper flights from College Station’s Easterwood Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth International or drive 90 miles southeast to George Bush Intercontinental for the nearest major airport.
