Northern Ohio city with a big appetite for bratwurst

Bucyrus is a small city in Northern Ohio that is in a convenient location in the state, has multiple parks and loves Bratwursts. The city calls itself the Bratwurst Capital of America, thanks to an annual festival saluting the German food each August that draws more than 100,000 people. Bucyrus celebrated its bicentennial in 2021, has seen a slight population decrease and has a little over 11,600 people, according to U.S. Census Data from 2020. “It’s a small quaint little place that has a historical downtown with beautiful older buildings still used for businesses,” Becky Lutz, assistant director of the Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, says. “People say this is a retirement town. But while many people are retired, there are also many vibrant young and mid-career professionals here.” The city’s economy is backed by jobs in insurance, agriculture and healthcare.

Bratwurst Festival draws 100,000 people annually

Although Sheboygan, Wisconsin residents may disagree, Bucyrus self-identifies as the “Bratwurst Capital of America.” The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival regularly draws more than 100,000 people to town the third week of August annually. Aside from the German food, there is a parade through downtown each night. Other summer events include movies in the park and First Fridays, while the Crawford County Fair has been held for 150 years.

Important to know

Summer temperatures reach the 80s, and winter temperatures dip into the teens. Around two feet of snowfall falls annually. “We experience the whole Midwest winter thing,” Lutz says. We usually get a lot of snow, but last year wasn’t too bad. When there’s a lot of snow, many rural schools miss time in class because roads get icy and unsafe.”

Crime has decreased over the past decade in Bucyrus, according to Police Chief Neil Assenheimer. "We've done a really good job of reducing crime and keeping it down," Assenheimer says.
