Original colorful Victorian homes throughout
Allentown homes pop with color and originality. “A walk down a street shows mansions and little workman cottages across from each other,” says Macdonald. Homes sit closer together, with smaller front yards. “The streetscapes are just bursting with gardens,” says Macdonald. “The summer season tends to be short, but we really, really make the most of it.” Wrap-around porches dot the area, and delicate cornices decorate porches. The most common housing styles are Queen Anne and Italianate, but smaller cottages and duplexes fill the area as well. “It’s a lot of fun to show and sell,” says Aichinger. “A lot of homes are upkept very well.” Most homes were built around 1900, and while homes have typically done upgrades in terms of kitchens and bathrooms, the homes are still older and may require more maintenance. Homes begin at $150,000 and reach $889,000 in Allentown. While most homes have private garages, some homes may only have street parking access.Smaller greenspaces throughout
Allentown often gives a park-like feeling with its overhanging trees and plentiful gardens. Arlington Park, in the northwestern corner of the neighborhood, is a smaller greenspace with a path down the middle. Tony Sisti Park, in the other corner, gives residents a spot to sit and have lunch while overlooking some modern art.Neighborhood elementary school and high school with dual credits
Buffalo does not have zoning areas for students, so families are free to pick which schools to attend. Students can begin at the Elmwood Village Charter School – Days Park, which receives a B-minus from Niche, for kindergarten through eighth grade. At Leonardo Da Vinci High School, rated an A-minus from Niche, students take college courses from Buffalo State College in order to graduate with up to 27 college credits. The school also offers internships, Advanced Placement courses and community service opportunities.
Art festival, classical music and a Roosevelt museum
Every second weekend in June, the Allentown Art Festival showcases over 400 artists, drawing in people from all over the state. “It’s great for people watching,” says Aichinger. “I saw a mohawk walking with a guy dressed like Thurston Hall.” More than just the annual events, Allentown also fills the street with music. “Kleinhans Music Hall is acoustically perfect,” says Macdonald. “And to be able to walk two blocks and listen to beautiful classical music in the afternoons is bliss.” Another notable feature is the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, a smaller museum in a Greek Revival home.A Walker’s Paradise in Allentown
There are multiple bus routes as well as access to the Light Rail on Main Street to the east of the neighborhood. Downtown Buffalo is just south of Allentown, and the neighborhood receives a Walk Score of 95 out of 100. “It’s a well-deserved score, you really can just walk everywhere,” Macdonald says.Allen Street bursting with life
A walk down Allen Street showcases the best of Allentown. “It’s all in one little strip,” says Todd Aichinger, a real estate person with MetroRoberts Real Estate. “There are little carriage streets that go nowhere but are fun to be on.” The street lights up with music, people and events through the year. “Nietzsche’s, for the last 30 years, has had live music seven days a week,” Macdonald says. “It’s made the national list for best dive bars across the country.” Mulligan’s Brick Bar was first opened in 1897 and has continued through various owners. “I’m 49, and my dad went there when I was a kid,” says Aichinger. “Back in the day, people would finish their beers and then throw the bottles at the brick wall.” More than the restaurants and bars, locally-owned stores line the street as well. From bicycle shops to convenience stores and markets, people are constantly out and about on the streets. “Because it’s a small commercial district, anytime you go out you see everyone in the neighborhood,” Macdonald says.
