Convenience in and near the neighborhood
With the retail and dining-filled stretches of both Hertel Avenue and Main Street running through Central Park, this self-sufficient neighborhood has many conveniences less than 15 minutes east of the Niagara River and U.S.-Canadian border. The area’s residential curb appeal is complemented by classic home designs, with some influenced by premier architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. “I remember growing up as a kid in North Buffalo and walking the streets of Central Park thinking, ‘I want to live here one day,’” says John Heffron, a longtime resident and real estate salesperson with Gurney, Becker & Bourne. Additional proximity to Delaware Park and its attractions means residents are never far from the great outdoors.

Classic homes along Central Park streets
Colonials primarily dot the tree-lined streets of Central Park, though other architectural designs are also mixed into the landscape. "There's some very attractive Victorians spattered throughout," Heffron, who's lived there for over a decade, says. "There's colonials, some brick homes, some wood frames and many have been incredibly well-maintained. A lot of these properties stay in families for a very long time." Other eclectic styles here include Tudors, American Foursquares and Cape Cod influences, and many were built before 1950. Residences are set back from the street, allowing for sizable front yards, and other accents include bay windows, balconies and tall chimneys adorning the roofs. Prices typically fall around $800,000, but could be between $600,000 and $700,000 for smaller homes or as high as $1.5 million for more stately properties.

Parks in and nearby to get outdoors
The most prominent green space in the Central Park neighborhood is Shoshone Park, which offers such amenities as a baseball field, a playground and a basketball court alongside a roller hockey rink. There’s also a planned indoor facility for the park, slated to be completed at the end of 2024 and the only one of its kind in the area. A turf field, batting cages and more for the community are within the plans for the building. "Shoshone Park has always been a mainstay of the neighborhood," Heffron says. "I grew up playing baseball there and there's been a lot of nice improvements. It's also still very walkable to Delaware Park, which is less than a mile away." A short drive southeast, the immense Delaware Park spans more than 300 acres and features Hoyt Lake, the Buffalo Zoo, the Buffalo History Museum and numerous athletic fields and facilities. Portions of Minnesota Linear Park and McCarthy Park are also within Central Park’s boundaries.
A hub of shopping and dining along Hertel Avenue
Hertel Avenue is the heart of Central Park and its surrounding area’s retail and shopping scene, lined with a number of restaurants, markets and more. Grab a morning beverage fit for Superman at Daily Planet Coffee or some inspired frozen treats at Lake Effect Ice Cream, or head a little further west down the road to Dash’s Market for groceries. Further down Hertel, chow down outdoors at the Moor Room or settle into an inviting barroom atmosphere at The Wellington Pub. Kostas Family Restaurant and Ristorante Lombardo are other stops along the avenue, and nearby establishments include Phat Catz Restaurant & Bar, the Howling Rooster Restaurant & Bar just north and more general needs at the Lexington Cooperative Market. "Hertel is the main hub for shops, restaurants, bars, shopping day spas, delis -- you name it, that's where it is," Heffron says. "I call it the 'underrated Elmwood Village' in that it's plenty busy, but not overly populated.”

History, sports and film on display
Along with its outdoor amenities, the nearby Delaware Park has a number of internal attractions that bring visitors in. The Buffalo History Museum’s Parthenon-esque design houses three floors of showcases paying homage to the area’s history in culture, politics, sports and more. The Buffalo Zoo, also in Delaware Park, was founded in 1875 and has an assortment of animals including wild cats, bears and marine life. Other local stops include areas where residents can break a sweat at boxing gyms and Terrie’s Workout Center. The North Park Theatre has operated for more than a century and shows current and past releases, while Gutter Pop Comics is along Hertel Avenue. Football fans can head about half an hour south to get to Buffalo Bills games.

Bouncing around Buffalo
Hertel Avenue is the trendy shopping and dining landmark in Central Park, but Main Street – also known as Route 5 – also runs diagonally through the neighborhood. The University of Buffalo is just northeast, and along Main there’s a number of other restaurants and storefronts. To the south, an interchange of Route 33 and Route 198 connects to Rochester via the former and close to the river via the latter, which is also known as the Scajaquada Expressway. "Public transportation almost isn't necessary because it's so walkable," Heffron says, "and people say you can be anywhere in 20 minutes. The main highways and thoroughfares are very easy to get to. Everything is right there."
Central Park is situated just north of this city highway intersection of Route 33 and 198.
There are buses running along Central Park on Main Street and there is a line on Hertel Avenue.
