Elmwood Bidwell
Investment properties and large homes around Soldier's Circle
There are hundreds of homes throughout the community in styles such as classic American Foursquares, Colonial Revivals and even some Tudor homes sprinkled throughout. There are also a number of condos and homes that could use a little fixing up. Many properties are tall and narrow and placed toward the street, allowing for close neighbors and maximizing backyard space. “Most of the homes in the northern end of Buffalo are made up of the classic Foursquare design,” Lenahan says. “But when you get around the Soldier’s Circle area, that’s where you get a lot of those larger multi-million-dollar houses.” Prices can also vary heavily, with investment properties and condos ranging between $100,000 and $400,000. Slightly larger homes can fall between $400,000 and $800,000, and some can even run between $1 million and $2 million.Local attractions around Delaware Park
Residents of Elmwood Bidwell are next to the famous Delaware Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of New York City’s Central Park. The park has soccer fields and pickleball courts and an 18-hole course at the Delaware Park Golf Course. There are also shaded trails that loop around a small lake where flamingo-shaped paddle boats can be used in the warmer months. The Buffalo Zoo and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum are also nearby. “Even the houses that hold the animals are architectural marvels,” Lenahan says. “And the AKG is a world-class museum that just reopened this year after a massive renovation.”Access to local schools and Buffalo State University
Students can begin their education at PS 019 Native American Magnet School, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school with a C rating on Niche. They can then head to the B-minus-rated PS 207 Lafayette International Community High School. The school is one of the oldest public schools in Buffalo and the oldest that is still in its original building. Its brick and terracotta exterior was constructed in 1903. The neighborhood is also home to Buffalo State University, a public university founded in 1871.Community sidewalks and expressway access
The Scajaquada Expressway and Main Street are the main roads for the community, connecting residents to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport 9 miles away and the Erie County Medical Center Health Campus less than 4 miles to the east. These roads also lead to Interstate 190 for those commuting to downtown Buffalo or crossing the bridge to Canada. Pedestrians are common in the community, and residents often stroll along the shaded streets to a nearby store or Delaware Park.Asian cuisine and one of the top rated burgers in New York
There are a number of dining options on Main Street, including Rock Burger, a local chain restaurant that has been voted the #2 burger in the state of New York and the #1 burger in western New York. The burgers here are stacked high with toppings and over 30 unique options. Residents can also stop by Saigon Café just south of the neighborhood for a mix of Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. Nearby shopping options include the Lexington Cooperative Market and the Price Rite Marketplace.Holiday markets and Shakespeare in the park
During the holiday season, the community comes together for the Buffalo Holiday Market, which takes place on the Buffalo State University campus. Here, residents can peruse the rows of vendor goods and trinkets. During the summer, residents can also sit in the grass to enjoy Shakespeare in Delaware Park. Over the course of about seven weeks, the park hosts 44 performances of two different Shakespearean works. There are no tickets, so residents can come and go as they please. “It's second only to the one they have in Central Park,” Lenahan says. “It's all free, so you can grab a seat on the hill and relax; it's all very nice.”
