Fillmore-Leroy has a modern take on ‘Sears’ homes
Fillmore-Leroy is mainly made up of doubles built between 1900 and 1920 and features Cape Cod and Colonial Revival-inspired architecture like pitched roofs, dormer windows and covered porches. “These are what we call ‘Sears catalog homes,’ because this was an old working-class neighborhood,” says Ayat Nieves, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson with Keller Williams Realty. “People used to order their houses right from the Sears catalog. They’d ship you all the materials and you’d get an instant house.” While the shapes of homes are similar, it is unlikely that anyone in the neighborhood will get confused since no two homes are painted the same colors. Neighbors also distinguish their homes by planting gardens in their front yards and alongside the sidewalks. Most properties in Fillmore-Leroy sell for under $200,000. “You can get a great house for $ 100,000 or $200,000. People are looking for affordable housing, and that’s what this neighborhood provides,” Nieves says. The community gathers at the People’s Park
People’s Park on Main Street is a small space packed with raised flower beds and an amphitheater where community members put on concerts. Kensington Avenue is home to the Kensington Pool and Splash Pad, a popular community summer attraction, as well as Dewey Playground and Cricket Ground just down the street. The Dewey Cricket Ground became the first cricket ground in Buffalo in 2021. The neighborhood is also next door to Delaware Park, which at 350 acres is one of the largest parks in Buffalo. This spacious area is home to a public golf course, a large lake and the Buffalo Zoo, which is the third-oldest zoo in the country.Buffalo Schools offer vocational or STEM specializations
Kids attending Buffalo Public Schools may start out at nearby schools like P.S. 61 Arthur O Eve School of Distinction, which covers kindergarten through fourth grade, or P.S. 89 Dr. Lydia T. Wright School of Excellence, which goes from kindergarten up to eighth grade. These schools are ranked C and C-minus on Niche, respectively. Two nearby high school options are P.S. 301 Burgard High School and P.S. 366 Research Laboratory High School for Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Burgard earns a C on Niche and is a vocational school that offers students career studies in welding, auto-tech and precision machining technology. Research Laboratory High School opened in 2016 as a specialized school for students interested in entering the medical field. This school has a B on Niche.
