A community with a sweet history
With street names like Grape, Peach and Orange, Fruit Belt’s history comes together everywhere. Once home to fruit farming, the historically black community is now entirely residential. A part of the borough's most recent history tells the story of community activism in the face of gentrification. Locals of this borough live just east of Lake Erie within walking distance of downtown entertainment.

As interest grows, so does local conversation around what will happen to those who have been here,” Nieves says. Grassroots organizations dedicated to strengthening community ties are prominent here. The Fruit Belt Coalition regularly hosts block party meetings and organizes community-enrichment events, from holiday celebrations to health fairs and community offerings just for teens and kids.
