Parkside
Delaware Park and The Buffalo Zoo
Delaware Park, Parkside's namesake, runs alongside much of the neighborhood. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1868, the park is home to several sports fields, including pickleball courts, soccer fields and an 18-hole golf course. These amenities are all connected by miles of shaded trails, and there is also a lake with flamingo-shaped paddle boats in the summer. “I go there three or four times a week to jog or bike around,” Lenahan says. The park is also home to The Buffalo Zoo, a popular attraction for tourists and families, with over 1,400 animal exhibits. “Whenever I help a family move into the area, I like to give them a pass to the zoo as a closing gift, everyone’s a big fan of it,” Lenahan says.Historic Buffalo homes from the early 1900s
Residences in Parkside tend to offer a little more space, compared to other parts of Buffalo, and come in dynamic shapes and colors. Trees line most of the residential streets, and Colonial Revivals, American Foursquares and Queen Anne-inspired homes make up the majority of the market. Many houses have at least three bedrooms and plenty of backyard space. “There’s a lot of beautiful homes in the area, with lots of natural woodwork that were built over a hundred years ago,” Lenahan says. Home prices can range from $200,000 to $400,000 on the eastern end of the neighborhood and $400,000 to $650,000 on the western end of the community. Some larger and more extravagant homes can cost more than $1 million.Walkability and nearby expressways
With parks and schools nearby, the Parkside neighborhood is known for its walkability. Regardless of the season, residents can be seen on the sidewalks along the suburban streets and local trails, whether on a short commute or simply getting in their daily steps. Drivers have access to both the Scajaquada Expressway and Main Street to easily traverse Buffalo’s roads. Larger highways, like Interstate 190, are located 3 miles to the east. The Buffalo Niagara International Airport is 8 miles from the community, and the Erie County Medical Center Health Campus is less than 3 miles away.Buffalo Public Schools
Students can begin their education at the PS 064 Frederick Law Olmsted school, which receives an A-minus rating on Niche. They can then continue to the C-plus-rated PS 081 School until they head to the B-rated Middle Early College High School. Private school options are also available, with the Elmwood Franklin School teaching kindergarten through eighth-grade students and earning an A rating. The Nichols School scores an A-plus and offers middle and high school options. Niche ranks the school as the #2 private high school option in the city, known for its hockey team and private hockey rink.Local coffee shops and modern Mexican cuisine
Parkside’s location is just a short trip from several popular shopping and dining options. JAM, located close to the area’s center, is a café that serves coffee and tea and is known for its community focus. Lloyd Taco Factory has served the community via storefront and food truck since 2010. Mexican street food and burritos are the main draws, and residents can relax in a modern industrial setting while enjoying custom cocktails. Daily necessities can be found at the Delaware Consumer Square Target, less than 3 miles from the neighborhood.Celebrating Polish heritage and buffalo wings
In Late August, residents gather for The Chicken Wing Festival, which includes two days of activities, amateur sauce competitions, eating contests and live music. The event attracts over 80,000 people a year. Residents can also celebrate Dyngus Day in April each year, a day filled with pussywillows and polka music as the city celebrates Polish pride and ushers in the spring. The celebration includes a parade through the center of Buffalo, authentic souvenirs and fresh hot perogies.
