Agricultural area outside Chicago
Large lots and wide-open spaces accompany the homes in Burlington, Illinois, set at the crossroads of Plank and Burlington roads. Incorporated in 1906, Burlington became a productive agricultural area and still maintains those roots. The Kane County village offers a mix of suburbia and exurbia with rural scenery, and its small-town feel is evident around the central area and Main Street. Realtor Ryan Carney says, “It’s Barney Fife — the Andy Griffith Show — that’s Burlington.” An agent named in 2022’s top 10% at Keller Williams Inspire, Carney describes the town as being surrounded by cornfields and quite small. “You could do a town tour in ten minutes, on foot. Otherwise, it’s very, very rural."
New builds and large historic homes
Homebuyers will find a wide range of architectural styles in the village, with modern, 21st-century builds and homes dating back to the early 1900s. Surrounding Main Street, vintage examples include American Foursquares and Victorian-inspired farmhouses, while beyond the town's center are ranch-style houses, Colonial Revivals and modern traditional homes. For around $700,000, a buyer might find a six-bedroom, newly renovated home on a sprawling multiacre lot. A two-bedroom 1930s bungalow with just over 1,000 square feet of space might cost under $200,000.

Burlington Park and the Burlington Prairie Nature Preserve
In the warmer months, locals enjoy views of golden sunsets over rolling, green hills, and once the snow has fallen, folks can be found snowmobiling in one of the area's nature preserves. The Burlington Prairie Nature Preserve has 949 acres of grasslands, wetlands and forests. Four miles of mowed grass trails wind through the preserve, popular among local equestrians, hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers. When the weather is nice, sports enthusiasts looking to play baseball, basketball, or tennis flock to Burlington Park, also home to the Central District Baseball League's Little League games and practices.

Local eateries on Main Street
A small selection of locally owned eateries along Main Street are regular haunts for Burlington residents. Mott's Lounge, the oldest family-owned bar in Kane County, has been in business since 1924. Patrons can grab a cold beer or a handcrafted cocktail to go along with a juicy bacon cheeseburger and homemade French fries. The lounge's acoustic night is a favorite for local musicians to showcase their talents. For home cooking, area farm stands provide seasonal produce, and it's a scenic 4-mile drive north past farms and open fields to Block's Fresh Market in Hampshire.

Central School District 301's highly rated schools
In addition to Burlington's peaceful rural atmosphere, buyers are also drawn to the area because of Central School District 301's highly rated public schools. “Central is a great place to be,” says Dr. Esther Mongan, superintendent of schools for the district. “We’ve had 875 new students come to our district since 2017.” It’s expected that even more families will move into the area, due to newly built single-family homes and townhouses and approved future developments on open land.
Howard B. Thomas Grade School, enrolling prekindergarten through fifth-grade students, has a B-plus grade from Niche. Junior High Students go on to Prairie Knolls Middle School for sixth and seventh grade and Central Middle for eighth grade. Across the street from Central Middle, there's Central High, where students can earn the State Seal of Biliteracy and enroll in a dual credit program to earn up to 30 transferable credits through Elgin Community College. The middle schools and high school each have an A-minus from Niche, which lists them among the top 10 in their categories within Kane County.
