A balance between rural suburban living and quick travels to Cincinnati

Burlington has a semi-rural character and a slower-paced lifestyle than other Cincinnati suburbs. This northern Kentucky suburb is a compelling choice for families who value private day-to-day living while still being a short ride away from the airport and the city’s best offerings. “It’s one of those up-and-coming communities. You’ve got farms going all the way out in some parts of the area, there’s some hilly parts, and lots of subdivisions,” says Linda Mildon, a real estate agent with Re/Max Victory. who has sold homes in Burlington and the surrounding area for over four decades. “It is a bedroom community for Cincinnati, but the area’s got it all.”

Burlington housing with spacious yards and diverse price points

Most homes in Burlington's market were built from the 1970s into the present, giving the area a consistent new traditional style with a focus on brick and vinyl exteriors and large yards. Single-family homes in varying sizes make up most of the options for sale, with an abundant selection of ranch-style properties, split levels and Colonial Revival-influenced homes. Condos and townhomes from the same period round out the area’s home selection. Most of these sit on the east side of town and share the same new traditional stylings. Burlington’s median sale price of about $300,000 sits below the national figure but slightly above the median value for homes in Kentucky.

16 miles away from Cincinnati

For travel beyond Cincinnati, residents are just southwest of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. “It’s really easy to get to the airport, which is huge if you commute by air for work or you’re retired and take a lot of trips,” Mildon says.

Thoroughfares such as Kentucky Route 18 and Bend Road/Kentucky Route 237 are some of Burlington’s key roads for local travel, but the community is also a short distance from Interstates 71 and 275. Cincinnati is about 16 miles away. The closest emergency room is at St. Elizabeth Hospital Florence, about 6 miles east of Burlington.

In addition to commuters traveling into the city for work, the Cincinnati Enquirer counts St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Fidelity Investments, DHL, Boone County Schools, Kroger and Amazon among the Northern Kentucky area’s largest employers.

Highly-rated schools of Boone County in the neighborhood

Boone County Public Schools, the third-largest school district in Kentucky, serves kids in Burlington. Randall K. Cooper High School’s drama department produces two main stage shows each year. The school earns an A-minus grade. One of the city’s main options for private school learning is the Immaculate Heart of Mary School, a Catholic school serving children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is unranked on Niche.

Northern Kentucky parks along the Ohio River

On the north side of town, England Idlewild Park has about 300 acres of preserved wilderness and wetlands, along with a playground, a disc golf course and a popular dog park. Tennis, volleyball and pickleball are mainstays at Boone Woods Park, which also hosts concerts in the summer; to its immediate south, the R.C. Durr YMCA hosts youth sports programs and maintains an indoor and outdoor pool. In the summertime, kids go to YMCA Camp Ernst, which has a ropes course, lake access and a horseback riding ranch for young ones to enjoy during overnight and day camp sessions.

Burlington generally experiences warm summers, reaching an average high of 86 degrees; winters can get chilly, with snowfall averaging 20 inches per year. “The snow can get pretty ugly in the winter,” Mildon says. According to the Flood Factor index, areas near waterways like Allen Fork and Woolper Creek may experience higher flooding risks.

Shopping and dining in Historic Burlington

Local dining favorites in Burlington’s small downtown area include laid-back American classics at Washington Square and acclaimed steakhouse fare in a classic setting at Tousey House Tavern. A few small businesses round out the options in the historic downtown area, while a Kroger store on Burlington Pike is a go-to for groceries. “For all the other major shopping options most people go out toward Florence,” Mildon says. The community to Burlington’s east has the nearest Walmart, Costco and Target stores, alongside other big-box retailers and the Florence Mall. Additional shopping is also available to the north in Hebron .

Events and entertainment at the Boone County Fairgrounds

Several annual traditions happen at the Boone County Fairgrounds in town each year, including the Boone County 4-H & Utopia Fair each August and the Burlington Antique Show in April. “There are also so many other areas around Cincinnati with so much to do that you don’t have to stay in town,” Mildon says.
