West Burlington
A range of subdivisions with distinct styles
Unlike older areas such as Downtown Burlington, most of the tidy subdivisions populating West Burlington were built in the 1960s and onward. These established areas feature wide, winding streets lined by shady trees and distinct architectural styles. Some are populated by split-levels and ranch-style homes, while others are home to brick Colonial Revivals and vinyl-sided New Traditional. Smaller cottages and Cape Cods occupy petite lots on the eastern end of the area, closer to Downtown. These older single-family homes typically list between $150,000 to $500,000. New builds feature asymmetrical or barnlike rooflines and other rustic Craftsman elements, while large luxury properties in sought-after subdivisions such as Waterford lean toward classy Colonial Revival or French-inspired flairs. These high-end homes push prices above $500,000 to the $1 million mark.Smith Elementary cultivates global learners
Alamance-Burlington Schools operates three elementary schools and one middle school in the neighborhood. Many homes are zoned to Marvin B. Smith Elementary, a centrally located school that scores a B from Niche. This globally-minded elementary school assigns each grade level a different region of the world to study over the course of the school year, culminating in a global parade where students show off what they’ve learned and celebrate their own culture by wearing its traditional attire. Turrentine Middle is also located in West Burlington and earns a C-plus, while Walter M. Williams High is nearby in Downtown Burlington and receives a B. Williams High is the only high school in the county that offers the International Baccalaureate Program.Outdoor fun and youth games at Joe C. Davidson park
Set against the backdrop of the Burlington water tower, Joe C. Davidson Park is a favorite among families. Kids can scale an orange, fish-shaped climbing wall to roam around a three-tiered playground, which includes handicap-accessible equipment. Benches and picnic tables line the perimeter of the play area, tucked beneath the trees to offer some shade to parents while they watch. “We have a bunch of soccer fields there, so there’s always a lot of activity,” Sparks says. A short walking path weaves from paved walkways to wooded trails, giving a full tour of this expansive park. For more kid-friendly fun, folks tend to head to Burlington City Park. Unlike typical community parks, this Downtown hub houses amusement rides such as a restored 1910 carousel and a miniature train. “They do tons of little events at that park, and a lot of the Burlington parks facilities like the tennis courts are close by,” says Katherine Burkholder, a Realtor with Re/Max Diamond Realty.Shopping and dining near I-40
Some of the city’s busiest shopping centers are situated in West Burlington. Along Interstate 40, Alamance Crossing is an outdoor shopping destination anchored by department stores such as Dillard’s and entertainment venues like Carousel Cinemas. Shoppers can peruse name-brand retailers from Talbots to American Eagle or shop small at Burlington boutiques, including Ivy Blue. The shopping center houses a few chain restaurants in addition to locally owned eateries. Red Bowl Asian Bistro is a casual stop-in for a variety of Asian fare, from sushi rolls to Thai stir fry. Right next door, Cork & Cow serves salads and sandwiches, but the real star of the show are its varieties of cheeses paired with flights of wine and other munchable small bites. Holly Hill Mall is right up the street and houses more restaurants in addition to big-box stores such as Publix. For easy errand runs, there’s a Harris Teeter and Lowe’s close by. Other smaller shopping centers dot the neighborhood’s bordering thoroughfares, putting grocery stores or to-go meals within arm’s reach of most homes.Commute to Greensboro or Durham
U.S. Route 70, locally called South Church Street, passes directly through the area and serves as an alternative route to Interstate 40, which runs along the neighborhood to the south. Via I-40, Greensboro is roughly 20 miles west or about a 25- to 30-minute commute. To the east, Durham is approximately 35 miles away and generally takes 40 to 50 minutes to reach depending on traffic conditions. Major employers in the area, such as Cone Health Alamance Regional, Elon University and Labcorp are all just outside of the neighborhood in Burlington and Elon. “A lot of folks I work with on the buyers’ side move here because they’re in situations where maybe the husband works at Duke and the wife works at Cone, which makes Burlington the perfect in-the-middle place to divide and go in different directions with job locations,” Sparks says.
