Sharing a zip code with Chicago
Just beyond the southern border of Chicago is the village of Burnham, which shares the same zip code as the big city. The village has a population of just over 4,000 and provides a lifestyle at a much slower pace. “Burnham is right there on the cusp of Chicago,” says Telly Rayford, a real estate broker at HomeSmart Realty Group with nearly ten years’ experience. “A lot of people have lived in Burnham their whole lives and still want to be close to the city. Burnham is a great location because you get the best of both worlds.”

Close to two rivers
The northern part of Burnham provides access to either the Little Calumet River or the Grand Calumet River. There are some waterside eating opportunities, including Waterfront Marine, which has outdoor seating where pub grub like wings, pizza and burgers can be enjoyed while watching the river flow. La Isla Bonita is a waterfront café and nightclub that has boat parking and serves brunch. It’s also the place to catch the football game, especially if the Chicago Bears are playing. Deep Soul House features a live DJ on Thursdays. Getting in the door is free, but there is often a parking fee. For quick grocery items, All Foods is a supermarket specializing in African, Caribbean and American goods.

Plans for more recreation in Burnham
An extension of the Cal-Sag Trail is proposed to be completed by late 2024 and will extend into Burnham. It will be 26 miles long and the longest trail in the south suburbs when it's complete. The trail will run south of the Little Calumet River and pass through Blackburn Park. The park is at the end of a neighborhood road and has a small picnic area, playground and basketball courts. The trail will end south of the Burnham Prairie Nature Preserve, a prime spot for bird watching, whether overhead or diving into the water for food. Further east, Powderhorn Lake is connected to a large marsh on the north end. The lake features boat launches for canoes, kayaks and boats with electric trolling motors. The connected nature preserve has prairie and wetland habitats and is another popular bird-watching place. The chance to play 18 holes is provided at Burnham Woods Golf Course, where golfers can expect smaller greens, lots of mature trees and a couple of streams to navigate around.

Downsizing destination
Because homes here are smaller and older, they attract a particular set of homebuyers. “This is a place where older people tend to move to downsize,” says Joseph Blockson, a real estate agent with HomeSmart with six years of experience. “It’s still only a 20 to 30-minute drive to downtown Chicago.” Most homes were built between the 1950s and ‘70s and are priced between $160,000 and $250,000, with brick bungalows and tri-level houses being the most prominent. Three bedrooms and between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet of space are the average size of a typical Burnham house. Smaller Minimal Traditional houses with around 1,000 square feet can be found, as well as condos. Both can be found at a price under $100,000.
Burnham has an overall CAP crime score of 5, slightly above the national average. There are some higher scores recorded for violent crime categories.

Burnham Community Center
On Torrence Avenue, the Burnham Community Center provides resources for the community center. They have hosted job fairs and been the site of informal conversations with members of the village government. During the fall of 2023, flash flooding hit the village of Burnham, and FEMA was set up inside the community center to help residents affected by the flooding. There is a risk of flooding with rivers close by, especially for those living close to the water.
