Urban-industrial neighborhood nearby to Uptown
East Butte is an urban neighborhood with century-old homes and an industrial feel, reflected in its many commercial buildings. Like the Uptown area of Butte, East Butte has ties to the mining industry. During the booming mining days between the late 1800s to around the mid-1980s, the neighborhood had Serbian and Lebanese immigrants live in the area as working miners. While many of these residents don’t live here now, it still showcases tributes to the mining history. Many of the area’s houses and former businesses still stand with plaques from the National Register of Historic Places. “We still have a small town feel where everyone helps each other, and people take time for each other,” says Denise Kelly, broker/owner at RE/MAX Premier.
Century-old homes south of Mercury Street
Like the rest of Butte, many of the homes in East Butte are from the late 1800s to the 1920s. Homes are on the smaller side, usually 2,000 square feet at the most. Lot spaces are larger here than in Uptown, and people may have their own garages or side yard. Street parking is also common. North of Mercury Street contains industrial sites and buildings, while south of Mercury Street is where most residents live. Houses vary between shotgun homes, cottages and multi-family homes. Prices range from $68,000 to $447,500.

Home to Berkeley Pit
The neighborhood is home to two parks. McGruff Park has a skate park and some green space. Koprivica Park has a playground and field space for running around with kids or dogs. Along with colorful gardens, Old Lexington Gardens is a historical site containing many of Butte’s firsts, including the first high school as well as the first stamp mill and smelter. The Blacktail Creek trail, with over 4 miles of trails, is the closest for residents. Berkeley Pit is a local landmark, a massive man-made depression created from 30 years of open pit mining. It’s now a local destination, with a viewing stand for exploring the geology and history of this former mine. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund remediation efforts have been underway for decades, and it is now being considered as a repository for contaminated materials from other Superfund sites in the Silver Bow Creek Corridor. Kelly noted that the pit is now full of water and contains 21 minerals.

Multiple restaurants on Arizona Avenue
Most restaurants in the area are located along Arizona Avenue or near Uptown. Mountain View Coffee Company and Copper City Coffee are known for their friendly baristas and smooth espresso beverages. Sparky’s Garage Bar and Grill's interiors resemble an old-timey gas station with antique pumps, Coca-Cola machines, and a pickup truck that doubles as seating. Their menu features barbecue brisket pulled pork and burgers. Other restaurants can be found in the Uptown area. “Some of the oldest restaurants are there,” Kelly says, noting that the popular, locally owned Pekin Noodle Parlor is the oldest Chinese restaurant in the country. For groceries, there’s Safeway on Front Street. Front Street Market and Catering is a small business that sells international and local foods including spices and wines.
