Northeast Butte neighborhood between two mining pits
One of Butte’s oldest neighborhoods, Greeley is still recovering from the height of the city’s mining days. “The Greeley neighborhood was founded back when there was active mining on Butte Hill,” says R. Edward Banderob, president of the Greeley Neighborhood Development Corporation Inc. “It was promoted as an area away from the mining contamination on the Hill.” The area’s history is reflected through its turn-of-the-20th-century homes and locally-owned restaurants that have been around for generations, and its location on the northeast edge of the city means quick access to interstates and the amenities in Uptown Butte. But Greeley’s location between the Berkeley and Continental Mining Pits is also one of its challenges; the Continental Pit is still active, and the neighborhood feels the repercussions. “There’s still negative air shed. When the wind is blowing, it comes into our neighborhood and goes into the atmosphere. As we leave our pickups or vehicles overnight, we wake up to dust with heavy metals,” Banderob says. The community has advocated for cleaner air for years through health studies and meetings with state, local and national officials.
Small early 20th century homes and community-forward attitude
Greeley is a primarily residential area with homes built in the late 1800s and early 20th century. “I happen to live in a house that was bought in 1916. It’s my wife's father’s parents' house from 70 years ago,” Banderob says. In 1955, the neighborhood got an influx of residents after the opening of the Berkeley Pit eliminated many neighborhoods from Butte Hill. These residents often stayed in trailers and manufactured homes that are still used today. The neighborhood also has Craftsman-style, shotguns and ranch-style houses, and homes are small, usually spanning less than 2,000 square feet. Some homes have a separate garage, while others require street parking. Prices range from $65,000 for fixer-uppers to $389,000 for properties closer to Grand Avenue.
Greeley has differing home styles ranging from Craftsmans to shotguns and ranches.

Eat like a miner at the Pasty Place
Greeley has mostly locally-owned establishments in buildings blending in with residential structures. Christina’s Cocina is a Mexican restaurant that serves traditional foods like tostadas, enchiladas and tacos. Inside the restaurant is McGrath’s Pub, a laid-back bar serving beers and cocktails. The Pasty Place allows customers to eat like the miners did; it serves pasties, a meat pie typically made with steak or beef, potatoes and onions. Harrison Avenue offers several shopping options, including the Butte Plaza Mall. While the indoor shopping space is a shell of its former self, a revitalization is in the works. Current stores include Maurice’s and Joann. Safeway on Massachusetts Avenue sells groceries, while Walmart Supercenter is 3 miles away on Harrison Avenue.

McGruff Park has a skate park and basketball courts. Dogs can run around Skyline Dog Park, and kids can cast their lines at the fishing pond. Hikers and bikers up for a challenge can use the Maud S.
