Greeley
Neighborhood in Butte, Montana
Silver Bow County 59701
Small early 20th century homes and community-forward attitude
Greeley is a primarily residential area with homes built in the late 1800s and early 20th century. “I happen to live in a house that was bought in 1916. It’s my wife's father’s parents' house from 70 years ago,” Banderob says. In 1955, the neighborhood got an influx of residents after the opening of the Berkeley Pit eliminated many neighborhoods from Butte Hill. These residents often stayed in trailers and manufactured homes that are still used today. The neighborhood also has Craftsman-style, shotguns and ranch-style houses, and homes are small, usually spanning less than 2,000 square feet. Some homes have a separate garage, while others require street parking. Prices range from $65,000 for fixer-uppers to $389,000 for properties closer to Grand Avenue.Splash pads and ice rinks at Clark Park
While Greeley has no parks, several green spaces sit on the other side of Grand Avenue. Summers are busy at Clark Park, which has a splash pad and volleyball courts, and when colder months approach, residents enjoy the Butte Community Ice Center indoor skating rink. McGruff Park has a skate park and basketball courts. Dogs can run around Skyline Dog Park, and kids can cast their lines at the fishing pond. Hikers and bikers up for a challenge can use the Maud S. Canyon Trail, a 4-mile looped trail through East Ridge Mountain.Dual credit courses offered at Montana Technological University
Students may attend kindergarten through sixth grade at either Emerson Elementary or Whittier Elementary. These schools earn B-minus and C-plus grades from Niche, respectively. East Middle is less than a mile away for seventh and eighth-grade students and earns a C-plus. Students can wrap up grade school at Butte High School, which also earns a C-plus Niche grade. Dual credit courses in engineering, math and welding are offered through Montana Technological University and Highlands College of Montana Tech.Continental Drive reaches nearby interstates
Drivers can reach Uptown in 2 miles using Continental Drive. Drivers can head south on that same roadway to reach Interstates 15 and 90; these routes connect to the cities of Helena and Bozeman. Bus stops are available along Grant Avenue for free rides to Uptown. South of Harrison Avenue is the Bert Mooney Airport, which provides daily flights to Salt Lake City.Eat like a miner at the Pasty Place
Greeley has mostly locally-owned establishments in buildings blending in with residential structures. Christina’s Cocina is a Mexican restaurant that serves traditional foods like tostadas, enchiladas and tacos. Inside the restaurant is McGrath’s Pub, a laid-back bar serving beers and cocktails. The Pasty Place allows customers to eat like the miners did; it serves pasties, a meat pie typically made with steak or beef, potatoes and onions. Harrison Avenue offers several shopping options, including the Butte Plaza Mall. While the indoor shopping space is a shell of its former self, a revitalization is in the works. Current stores include Maurice’s and Joann. Safeway on Massachusetts Avenue sells groceries, while Walmart Supercenter is 3 miles away on Harrison Avenue.
