Home to one of Butte’s only master-planned subdivisions, this suburban area also has 20th-century homes with large lots. Hillcrest’s housing stock consists of only single-family homes. Homes have driveways or two-to-three-car garages, and properties can come with small front lawns or side yards. Hillcrest is home to the Columbia Garden Estates subdivision, which was developed in 2011 and has nearly 50 homes. This subdivision starts around Ottawa Street and ends around Carousel Way, and properties are often ranch-style or tri-level homes spanning less than 2,200 square feet. There is a $25 monthly HOA fee for living in Columbia Garden Estates. Outside of the subdivision are midcentury ranch-style homes; these properties are slightly larger than Columbia Garden Estates by around 500 to 800 square feet. Prices range between $384,000 for homes outside the subdivision to $485,000 for homes in Columbia Garden Estates.

Dogs can enjoy Skyline Park
The neighborhood does not have any designated parks, but on the other side of the highways near Hillcrest’s eastern border are the East Ridge Mountains, which have several trails for hiking or mountain biking. One of those trails is the Maud S. Canyon Trail, which spans 4 miles. South of the neighborhood is Skyline Dog Park, which opened in 2015 and is Butte’s first dog park. Dogs run around in a fenced-in area, and kids can enjoy the playground or the fishing pond. Butte Country Club, about 2 miles south, was established in 1899, making it Montana’s first country club. Members of this private club get full access to the 18-hole golf course, racquetball courts, an outdoor pool and a golf simulator.

Harrison Avenue is close by for restaurants and retail
Locals will have to travel to Harrison Avenue to grab a bite to eat or go shopping. Hanging Five Restaurant is an all-day breakfast, lunch and dinner spot serving chicken fried steak and cinnamon rolls. Mr. Hot Dogs is hard to miss since it’s in a bright yellow brick building; the menu includes gourmet hot dogs and spaghetti. Kimmi’s Bar and Casino is a local favorite for its friendly service and laid-back atmosphere. Safeway is nearby for groceries, and the Butte Plaza Mall has a handful of stores, including JoAnn and Maurice’s.
Smaller class sizes at Hillcrest Elementary
Students are zoned for Hillcrest Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche and has a student-to-teacher ratio is 17-to-1. Seventh and eighth-grade students can attend East Middle, which earns a C-plus, and then Butte High, also rated C-plus. The schools offer several dual credit courses that transfer to Montana Technological University, Highlands College of Montana Tech and University of Montana-Western.
Continental Drive connects drivers to nearby interstates
Residents use Continental Drive to reach Uptown Butte and other neighborhoods to the west. Drivers can find their way to I-90 and I-15 using the Harrison Avenue entrance. I-15 travels north to south, reaching Helena in 67 miles, and I-90 goes east to west, reaching Bozeman in 82 miles. Bert Mooney Airport offers daily flights to Salt Lake City. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers Butte an Environmental Justice Area because of the long-term impacts of its mining days. Therefore, Hillcrest residents may experience poor air quality days.
