Eastern Butte neighborhood within walking distance of schools

Located on the east side of Butte, Northern Pacific is a gridded neighborhood with a suburban ambiance. The 15-block neighborhood contains mid-20th-century single-family homes on lots larger than other Butte communities, and residents are within walking distance of the neighborhood’s assigned elementary and middle schools. Its location on the outskirts of Butte means residents can have quieter nights and be removed from the rest of this industrial city. Interstates 15 and 90 are accessible via Continental Drive, which borders the neighborhood to the east.

Restaurants on Harrison Avenue and in Uptown

About 3 miles west of the neighborhood is Harrison Avenue, a retail sector full of chain eateries and locally-owned restaurants doubling as casinos. The Florence Coffee Company sells hot and cold beverages, and Oasis Casino and Restaurant has a casual dining room with a few slot machines. Safeway is nearby for groceries. Uptown Butte, which is northwest of the neighborhood, has a variety of mom-and-pop eateries serving various cuisines. Casagranda’s Steakhouse has a brick exterior and darkened wood interiors; it serves upscale dishes like lobster tail and king crab. Locals head to Copper King Saloon for pool games and alcoholic beverages.

Bi-levels and ranchers surrounded by East Ridge Mountains

Northern Pacific resembles a 1950s suburban neighborhood. Streets are lined with single-story homes, trees are planted neatly next to every property and lots include front lawns or side yards. The East Ridge Mountains loom in the background, overlooking ranch-style and bi-level properties. Roads are wide, and lots are usually big enough to park an RV. Ranchers and bi-level homes built between the 1960s and 1980s have attached garages or separate sheds. Prices can range from $264,000 to $415,000.

North of 60-acre Skyline Park

Skyline Park spans 60 acres just south of the neighborhood. Hikers and bikers can use nature trails overlooking the city's landscape. Dogs can run around at its fenced-in dog park, and kids can enjoy its playground and fishing pond. Whittier Park includes a baseball field, tennis court and soccer fields, and about 2 miles away is Father Sheehan Park, named after Butte native and World War II Chaplain John Sheenan. It has multiple baseball fields and is home to the Butte Little League team. Maud S. Canyon Trail is a 4-mile looped trail with a scenic route overlooking the East Ridge mountains. The Butte Country Club, about 2 miles south of Northern Pacific, was the first country club to open in Montana. Members can access its 18-hole golf course and the country club’s other amenities, like its golf simulator, outdoor pool and racquetball courts.

Continental Drive gateway to interstates and city

Continental Drive forms the eastern border of Northern Pacific, linking the area to the rest of the city. Drivers can head 3 miles in opposite directions to reach Uptown and the retail on Harrison Avenue. They can also reach I-15 and I-90 by traveling south on Continental Drive. I-90 travels east through the west, reaching Anaconda in 28 miles. I-15 heads north to south and provides access to Helena in 68 miles. Bert Mooney Airport offers two flights daily to Salt Lake City through Delta Airlines. Residents should be mindful that Butte is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-designated Environmental Justice Area, a byproduct of the city’s century-old mining history, which left harsh chemicals in the soil and air. The EPA is working with the city to help residents with this issue.
