An Environmental Justice Area

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers Butte an environmental justice area because of its history of mining and smelting. That means some of Butte's soil and air can be contaminated with heavy metals. The EPA helps the area by partnering with community organizations and monitoring the situation.
