Butte neighborhood with German roots

Located in the southwest section of Butte, Williamsburg offers one-story and manufactured homes near highways and retail shopping. The neighborhood is named after Henry Williams, who managed a local silver, copper and gold melting factory called the Colorado Smelter in the late 1800s. Williamsburg’s streets have German names, a nod to the many German immigrants who worked at the factory, and it’s quadrupled in size, as it started as a neighborhood with just 62 homes. Interstate 15, which forms its northern border, separates the neighborhood from the rest of Butte; despite the interstate nearby, residents can expect a relatively quiet area.

Wop Chop is a fan favorite at Freeway Tavern

Across Interstate 15 is SheBrews Coffee, a café serving coffee drinks and breakfast and lunch combos. Bonanza Freeze is an old-fashioned joint with a small window for ordering food; visitors can choose from fast-food staples like burgers, fries and chili dogs. Freeway Tavern is an off-the-road establishment known for its friendly service and food options. Its specialty dish is the Wop Chop, a beer-battered pork loin sandwich with pickles and a side of fries. Harrison Avenue is 3 miles east for shopping. The decades-old Butte Plaza Mall only has a few stores left, like Joann and Maurice’s, but a redevelopment is underway. Walmart Supercenter is also on Harrison Avenue for groceries and other essentials.

Close to the large Stodden Park

Williamsburg has no parks, but it’s near some of the largest green spaces in the city. The Blacktail Creek Tail, or Ulrich-Schotte Nature Trail, is just shy of 4 miles; it overlooks the Blacktail Creek, where hikers and bikers can stop to birdwatch. Stodden Park has become one of the more popular parks in the city, with a playground and a carousel ride. Ridge Waters Water Park, located around Stodden Park, is the only water park in the Butte region. The park is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and has a lazy river, diving board and slides. Highland View Golf Course is also within the same area as Stodden Park; the 18-hole public course was built in 1939. Memberships to the Butte Family YMCA can include access to the indoor swimming pool, fitness centers and childcare. South of the neighborhood is Copper Mountain Recreation Complex, which has several baseball fields.

Combination of industrial buildings and single-family homes

The neighborhood has a mix of industrial buildings and single-family homes, so it’s not very walkable. Most homes have gravel driveways, two-car garages or street parking, and some have front yards and fencing. Manufactured homes and ranchers are the neighborhood’s primary home types, with structures built between 1920 and the 2020s. Mobile homes cost between $15,000 and $135,000, depending on age and size, but some new manufactured properties can cost almost $400,000. Single-family homes cost between $140,000 and $400,000. Williamsburg experiences poor air quality because of the smokiness from nearby states and mining activity. The city is working with the Environmental Protection Agency to help fix the problem.
