The swinging bridge is a calling card for Byram

For many years the Byram Swinging Bridge was the only bridge into Byram over the Pearl River. A swinging suspension bridge built in 1905, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and was later closed to vehicles. Today it's a symbol of this small city and worthy of its own annual festival. “People have been putting what they call love locks on the bridge, and they shine like jewels during a certain time of day,” says Mayor Richard White, who has lived in the Byram area for more than 35 years. Sitting just 10 miles south of Jackson, the city is growing. “We’ve got low taxes and affordable housing, we’re multicultural and safe, and we have plenty of shopping and dining,” says White. “I think we’re very friendly to our people and to business, and we’re welcoming of visitors.”

Contemporary housing stock with room to grow

With quality housing stock and proximity to Jackson, the real estate market in Byram is considered very competitive. In May 2024, the 12-month median price for a single-family home was $195,000, substantially higher than South Jackson to the north. A wide range of modest and contemporary architectural styles are represented in Byram. Homes range in price from around $125,000 for a three-bedroom cottage built in 2007 to $375,000 for a four-bedroom ranch-style home with an A-framed extension built in 1987. There is also ample opportunity to build, with vacant land for sale across the area. The well-maintained residential streets of the city are quiet and lack sidewalks, and most homes have driveways with garages or carports.

The Hinds County School District earns a grade of B- from Niche

Part of the Hinds County School District, Gary Road Elementary and Gary Road Intermediate share a campus and together they enroll students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Both earn a rating of B- from Niche as does Byram Middle School. Terry High School is a C+ school with approximately 1,200 students in grades nine through 12. Clubs and extracurriculars include band, yearbook, theater, student council and National Honor Society. Student accomplishments are celebrated on a group Facebook page for the high school with more than 3,000 followers.

Easy access to I-55

Byram is 10 miles south of Mississippi’s capital of Jackson via I-55. “A lot of people who commute go to the Jackson, Pearl and Brandon areas – it all works together,” says LaKendrick Powell, Parks & Recreation Coordinator for the City of Byram, and “its no more than a 20 to 25 miles radius.” I-55 runs south to New Orleans in Louisiana and north to Memphis in Tennessee. Terry Road runs the length of the city from north to south while South Siwell Road runs east to west.

A farmers market and steaks at Monte's

Upscale dining options are limited but one recommended spot is Monte’s Steak & Seafood, which brings New Orleans to Byram with its Cajun-Creole surf ‘n’ turf menu. “Our people are asking for more sit-down restaurants; we’ve met with a new prospect, and we think they’re going to come,” Mayor White says. Fast food stalwarts and discount stores – Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Walmart – cluster at the I-55 and South Siwell Road interchange. Kroger is also there. Rivers Market is a local farmers market open year-round, six days a week – it’s closed on Sundays – and is a great place for everything from fresh produce to frozen foods. The market also sells plants, clothing, accessories and home décor.

Park plans and off-roading opportunities

Byram has a handful of small parks, including Davis Road Park, which has a playground and a walking path. There is another playground beside city hall. Lake Dockery is also open for recreation. “The lake is very popular. You have fishing – bass catfish and brown,” says Powell. “It’s a pretty big lake. We have people who come from all over the area and the surrounding areas.” Thanks to a modest new tax on carry-out food, new city soccer fields are in the works, and they should be completed by 2026. Byram’s relatively rural setting means there are a lot of places to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Nearby Elton Swamp, for example, is a popular off-roading area for residents with ATVs and dirt bikes.
