Cairnbrook began as a town for coal miners

In the early 1900s, the Loyalhanna Coal and Coke Company developed mines in the area known as Cairnbrook, a mile west of Central City in Shade Township. The company built homes so coal miners could live close to work. Though most of the mines closed in 1958, many original homes still stand. Roads like McGregor Avenue call back to the area’s prominent figures, such as Jacob McGregor, the farmer who sold his land to the mining company. “It’s a quiet little town, and the homes are close to the schools,” says Lisa Cessna, an experienced Realtor with Bedford County Real Estate who's sold homes in the neighborhood. “There’s still some mining going on in the nearby area, but it’s been cut back by the government.” Cairnbrook continues to be a quiet place to live, with quick routes to work in Somerset or Johnstown.

Combined sports programs for Shade-Central and Shanksville-Stonycreek

Homes in the neighborhood are close to Cairnbrook Elementary School, where kids attend kindergarten through sixth grade. Niche gives the school a C. Next door to the elementary school, Shade Junior/Senior High School also earns a C and offers seventh through 12th grade. The high school football stadium and baseball field are off McGregor Avenue. The Shade-Central and Shanksville-Stonycreek districts combined their athletic programs into an all-sports program to make sure students have ways to participate in sports.

1900s homes from $65,000

The neighborhood features duplexes, bungalows and split-levels from the 1930s and earlier. “I sold a duplex there,” Cessna says. “A couple from New Jersey bought it to get away from the city, and their aunt and uncle moved into the second unit. The buyers were also allowed to raise chickens, so there aren’t rules against owning animals like that.” These two- and three-bedroom homes often have large yards, small front porches and uncovered parking. Prices range from $65,000 to $200,000. The neighborhood has a grid layout and spans from School Road to First Street.

Competing in the annual fish rodeo

Long backyards create space for outdoor fun, but there’s also Central City Recreation Park in Central City, which has three baseball fields, a basketball court and playground equipment surrounded by tall trees. Cessna points out how close Indian Lake is to the neighborhood, with its boat launch and Northwinds Golf Course. Closer to home, the Shade Sportsmen’s Club holds a fish rodeo once a year and a free kid's fish rodeo twice a year. Fishing enthusiasts compete to reel in the biggest catch. During the competition, they line the edge of the facility’s pond with fishing poles and nets. The club also hosts 3D Shoots on Sundays, where club members compete to hit the most foam targets in the woods around the facility.

Driving in and out of town

There are no sidewalks or bus routes in Cairnbrook, so getting around town or to Johnstown requires a car. Dark Shade Drive is the primary route to Johnstown. Rock Cut Road flows down to Lincoln Highway, otherwise known as U.S. Route 30, which takes drivers to Somerset. All places of worship are in Central City, like the St. Mary's Holy Assumption Church and Our Lady Queen of Angels church.
