Calcutta is a small Ohio town with proximity to Pittsburgh

Calcutta is a standard small town in Columbiana County, Ohio. Just 4 miles south, the towns on the Ohio River, like East Liverpool, see a flow of commerce. Meanwhile, life in Calcutta is purely residential. "It's your local hometown. Almost everyone has lived here their whole life," says Joyce Mays, a Realtor with Cedar One Realty and lifelong resident of Calcutta. The town is made up of spaced-out residential tracts and shopping plazas. Having multiple grocery options and relatively newer tract homes is a luxury in this area, where many of the small river towns might have one supermarket and mostly 100-year-old homes.

Ranch-style homes with plenty of yard space

Calcutta's median price of $170,000 is in line with neighboring towns, but its homes are relatively newer. "Older in Calcutta is 1960s or 1970s," Mays says. "It's different than somewhere like Wellsville where almost everything is 1920s or older." Residential tracts around Calcutta's town center typically have ranch-style and bi-level homes around the median price. Many have spacious tree-studded lots, often over half an acre. Large newer homes and countryside cabins can cost closer to $500,000.

Calcutta is the area's shopping hub

Most towns in the area might have one grocery store, but Calcutta has a concentration of shopping centers. The Summit Square Center on the south end of town has a Walmart and T.J. Maxx. Up state Route 170, there's a Tractor Supply, Giant Eagle Supermarket, ALDI and Busy Beaver home improvement store. Next to ALDI, there's Dunham's Sports, other recognizable stores and local shops like Beresford's Craft Meats. These plazas also have convenient necessities like doctor's and dentist's offices. There are plenty of casual chain restaurants and a few locally owned spots like Hoge's, a traditional American diner.

Hiking and camping in Beaver Creek State Park

Beaver Creek State Park borders Calcutta to the north. It spans more than 2,700 acres of Ohio wilderness, with trails through wooded hills and along the banks of Little Beaver Creek. There are also campsites throughout the park. Beaver Creek State Forest neighbors Calcutta's east side and offers wooded hiking trails. In town, the River Valley Baseball Complex has baseball, softball and athletic fields for local rec leagues. Turkana Golf Course is the go-to track for golfers in town. This 18-hole, links-style course is on the north end of town, off Route 170.

Freeways lead to Pittsburgh and nearby river ports

This tri-state area has many freeways running through it because of the shipping terminals along the Ohio River. East Liverpool, just 4 miles south, is one of the small towns that thrives off the river's flow of commerce by transitioning goods from ships to trains or trucks. As trade has slowed, more and more people commute to Pittsburgh, 45 miles southeast. Pittsburgh International Airport is only 30 miles southeast.
