A short drive to D.C.
Known for its large population of federal workers and its proximity to Washington, D.C., Camp Springs still maintains some of its quiet, rural character. Located about 14 miles from the nation’s capital and 3 miles from Joint Base Andrew — the home of Air Force One for presidential travels to and from D.C. — Camp Springs burgeoned with the Air Force base’s inception and the D.C. area housing shortage that followed World War II, and, later, the building of the Capital Beltway. The community reportedly earned its name because soldiers going to D.C. liked to set up camp near the area’s springs. Today, Henson Creek and streams course through the area, adding a countryside touch to the heavily residential community. “It’s a densely located area right smack in the middle of everything,” says Terry Catalano of Re/Max Leading Edge. Catalano has sold homes in the area for nearly 40 years.

Tree-lined streets and cul-de-sacs
Modest single-family houses with ranch-style, split-level and some cottages, with most built in the 1940s and 50s. Cul-de-sacs and streets generally don’t have sidewalks; green front lawns are well-mowed and close-cut, with landscaped trees, shrubs and hedges hugging closer to the house than the street. Old-growth trees take a premium spot on the lot, leaving the rest of the yard and the streets to bask in abundant sunlight. Prices range from $265,000 to $650,000. Average home sizes are roughly 2,825 square feet and most lots are 12,000 square feet.
Data-driven elementary school
Prince George’s Public Schools in the community include Allenwood Elementary School, a data-driven school with extracurricular activities and events like cultural field day and a book fair. Isaac J. Gourdine Middle School is the second stop for area students. Ninth through 12th-grade students can enroll in a career and technical education program at Crossland High School. After school, students can participate in clubs ranging from art and drama to recycling and business. All three schools have a C-minus rating from Niche. There are 15 colleges local to Camp Springs, including American and Strayer universities.

The Camp Springs splash zone is a summertime must-do
At Camp Springs’ main recreational attraction, Allentown Splash, Tennis and Fitness Park, the outdoor pool overflows with activity in the summer season thanks to its diving boards and “splash zone” kids pool. Six outdoor tennis courts are available for play or competitions, and the facility can be rented for birthday parties or special occasions. Camp Springs Community Park serves as an all-purpose recreation spot, with playing fields and outdoor basketball and tennis courts. Children can scramble about the tiered playground equipment that includes a curved slide and a rock-climbing wall. For a more rustic recreational outing, a visit to Henson Creek Park takes visitors along an almost 6-mile trail. Here, walkers, joggers and cyclists follow the paved path that winds through wooded areas and connects to different community parks. Horseback riders can even trot along the grass fields adjacent to the trail.

Cultural restaurants highlight the food scene
The main thoroughfare of Camp Springs Drive is filled with strip malls and small retail centers, as well as fast-food eateries and auto mechanic shops. At the Maryland chain Silvestre Chicken Rotisserie and Grill, hearty meals of Peruvian chicken and Mexican and Salvadorian dishes have become local favorites. And special foodie spots like Dog on The Curb, a mobile kitchen that serves sauced-up frankfurters like the Jamaican Jerk Dog and Buffalo Dog, offer alternatives to chain restaurant fare. The food truck usually parks near Camp Springs Apartments, but it moves around the D.C. area for special events like the Cherry Blossom Festival and has catering services. “There’s lots of places to eat, like Mama Stella’s,” adds Catalano. “And the Pentagon City Mall, the area’s biggest, is less than 20 minutes away.”
