Haystack Rock and unique businesses set Cannon Beach apart
Haystack Rock juts out of the Pacific Ocean, a mile or so away from the Seal Rock Beach neighborhood of Cannon Beach. Boutiques, art galleries, seafood restaurants and beach cottages line the neighborhood’s streets further inland. “I’ve driven the whole Oregon coast and visited every beach town,” says Jeff Etchison, a principal broker with Windermere Realty Trust, who has been in the business for 30 years and resides in Cannon Beach. “It’s just much more unique than all the other beach towns. The downtown doesn’t allow franchises here, so every business in Cannon Beach is unique in that way.”

Fresh seafood and local Northwestern cuisine
Most of Seal Rock Beach’s shops, restaurants and art galleries can be reached on foot between First Street and Third Street. Driftwood Restaurant & Lounge is the longest standing, founded in 1944. Patrons enjoy Willapa Bay oyster shooters and oyster Rockefeller at the bar’s leather stools before exploring menu staples like filet mignon, halibut or Dungeness crab casserole.
Further south, Anna’s Table is a source-to-table restaurant and takes pride in crafting Northwestern cuisine, with seasonal entrees including spring chinook salmon, petrale and root vegetable curry complemented by regional mushrooms. Customers can observe the chef and his team plating elegant dishes in the open kitchen from the light and airy dining room. The neighborhood is home to Mariner Market, though locals often travel south to Fresh Foods—less than 3 miles away—or to Costco and Fred Meyer in Warrenton for larger grocery hauls.

Running, biking and flying kites on the beach
The beach is one of the neighborhood’s main attractions. Visitors wade out to Haystack Rock to observe the surrounding marine life, including colorful sea stars and tufted puffins. Onlookers can catch glimpses of water spouting from the gray whales that pass town during their annual migration route from mid-March to mid-April, and again from mid-December to mid-January. “A lot of people like to just hang out and walk from one end to the other,” Etchison says. “It’s about a 3-mile stretch. They also like to run, ride bikes and fly kites.”
Ecola Creek curves inland from the Pacific Ocean, and Les Shirley Park stretches across its north shore. A green space and a popular gathering spot for Roosevelt elk, the park is the historic site of Private Hugh McNeal’s death, a member of the Lewis and Clark team. Downtown, a soccer field, two pickleball courts, a playground and a skate park lend to more outdoor recreation.

The Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest
The Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest has over 60 years of history. Started after an earthquake in Alaska caused a tsunami near the oceanfront town, the contest is held every June. Participants seek to outdo one another with intricate sand creations, and the event also includes a pancake breakfast, live music and a beach bonfire in the evening.

Condos with amenities like indoor tennis courts, indoor pools and proximity to the water can also be found in Seal Rock Beach. Two-bedroom units can cost between $500,000 and $715,000, while three-bedroom condos can sell for around $1.1 million.
Seal Rock Beach may be at a potential risk of flooding; high amounts of rainfall may cause water to rise in creeks, while high tides and strong waves may cause overflow from the ocean. Cannon Beach has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program since the 1970s, which makes federally backed flood insurance available to all property owners in the city.
