Cannon Township offers quiet living near Rockford and Grand Rapids

Cannon Township attracts residents looking for a more rural lifestyle near the jobs and city amenities of Grand Rapids and the charming downtown of Rockford. Along with its recreational lakes, Cannon Township is home to the only ski resort in the region, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

From modest ranch-style to multimillion-dollar lakefront homes

The median home sale price in Cannon Township is around $480,000, compared to $440,000 in Rockford and $300,000 in Grand Rapids. Multimillion-dollar houses, including lakefront properties and large luxury estates on acres of land, increase the township median. Smaller ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s and New Traditional houses built in the 2000s are also common. Some homes are in suburban housing developments, while others are tucked away on backroads in the woods. Homebuyers can also find townhouse-style condos between Lake Bella Vista and Silver Lake.

Cannonsburg Ski Area, a nature preserve and a community lake

Cannonsburg Ski Area has skiing and tubing in the winter, but it’s also a hot spot for recreation the rest of the year, featuring mountain biking, ziplining and a fall-time haunted forest. Pickerel Lake Park, also called the Fred Meijer Nature Preserve, offers 300 acres of nature to explore. Locals enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing and fishing on the boardwalk over the 80-acre lake. Bostwick Lake Park features a large deck with benches overlooking the lake. Stairs from the deck go down to a small grassy area where locals can cast a line.

Local restaurants and a grocery store on Belding Road

Belding Road isn’t a bustling corridor, but there are a few stores and restaurants spread out along the thoroughfare. Timbers Inn Restaurant & Tavern serves steak and seafood in a country lodge with a big stone fireplace. Bostwick Lake Inn is a local American restaurant known for serving walleye and lake views from the deck. Ric’s Food Center is the main grocery store in town. More stores and restaurants are less than 10 miles away in Rockford and less than 20 miles away in Grand Rapids.

College credit courses at Rockford High School

Five elementary schools serve the township, all rated A-minus to A by Niche. Students go on to East Rockford Middle School, rated A-minus, and Rockford High School, rated B-plus. At the high school, students can earn college credit through partnerships with Grand Valley State University and Ferris State University.

Start of Summer Celebration and other events in Rockford

Locals head to Rockford to attend community events, such as the Start of Summer Celebration, which kicks off the season with a carnival and fireworks. Rockford’s Harvest Fest is another big event locals look forward to. It’s been an annual tradition since the 1970s, featuring a classic car show, a chili cookoff and hay rides, among other autumn activities.

Getting to Rockford and Grand Rapids

Michigan Highway 44 (Belding Road) is the township’s main road. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to drive to Rockford and 20 to 25 minutes to reach Grand Rapids. Gerald R. Ford International Airport is also in Grand Rapids.
