Edgefield neighborhood welcomes renovation, preservation and expansion
Just three miles north of Canton, Ohio, the 120-year-old suburban neighborhood of Edgefield is clearly in transition. In the 20th century, it was a solidly blue-collar community known for its bungalows and cottage homes and residents who worked at major industrial plants, including Hoover and Wilson Rubber. Today, residents of Edgefield are more likely to work at nearby hospitals, Malone University or dlhBOWLES. The growth of jobs in education, service and construction is driving the renovation of older homes and schools and serious preservation of local parks. Bordered by Interstate Highway 77, Route 66, and Cleveland Avenue, Edgefield could be a noisy neighborhood. However, Canton has preserved over 800 acres of well-tended, interconnected and historically significant parks, which serve as a buffer against much of the traffic and noise.

Many of the homes that come to market are updated or nicely renovated. However, there are still a number of homes that are ready for buyers to start their own improvements.” She adds that travel doctors and nurses have discovered Edgefield, too, " because it's located close to so many hospitals. It’s only about eight miles to the airport.”

Traffic is manageable, but highways under construction will slow things down
The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority bus system connects Edgefield to downtown. A bus ride from Cleveland Avenue to downtown takes about 15 minutes. According to Beth Swope, a librarian at the North Branch of the Stark Library, traffic isn’t bad on 62 for those driving to and from work. However, she adds, “They’ve been working on the Hall of Fame exit.” While the improvement will likely draw more tourists to the area, it could increase traffic for residents.
Residents can find retailers, restaurants and grocery stores on Cleveland Avenue
Along Cleveland Avenue, strip malls with chain restaurants dominate. Milk and Honey, a locally owned traditional diner, serves burgers and ice cream and has done so for generations. “We used to go to the McKinley Memorial Library with my mom, and on the way home, we would stop at Milk and Honey for treats,” says Jenna Jeffery, who works at the Canton Visitor’s Center. The Raisin Rack sells grains and local produce for residents who wish to cook a healthy meal. Shoppers can also grab a smoothie there. Giant Eagle supermarket is just outside the neighborhood, a short drive outside the neighborhood. The Innkeeper’s Tattoo Parlor is nationally known as one of the best tattoo shops in the world. Owner Zac Adams has won countless awards locally, nationally and internationally. The shop is known for its artistry, originality and excellence with cover-up tattoos.

Interconnected parks surround Edgefield and provide abundant outdoor activities
Just south of Route 62, residents who want to walk or bike from Cleveland Avenue to Market Avenue can take the Pioneer Trail. They’ll pass by Malone University and end up right across from Weis Park and the North Branch of the Stark Library. On the neighborhood's western edge, homes overlook an inter-connected series of parks. Locals can enjoy a respite from city life with over 100 acres of green space, including Arboretum Park, Stadium Park and Monument Park. “Stadium Park is amazing in summer," says Colleen Cochran, who works for Canton Parks and Rec. "They have a very active garden club; someone is out weeding or watering every day. You can also enjoy wildlife. We often see deer and black squirrels.”

Expansions are underway at The Pro Football Hall of Fame
Stadium Park decorates for Christmas each year, and in 2023 “almost 1,200 people came” to their annual lighting festival, says Cochran. The Pro Football Hall of Fame, just a half mile west of Edgefield, is constructing an indoor water park, making it more of a multi-day destination to appeal to non-football lovers as well. Downtown Canton also holds monthly First Friday events in Centennial Plaza, just over 2 miles southeast of the intersection of I-77 and Fulton Drive.
