A community at the birthplace of football history

Home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, Edmeyer Park is a residential enclave steeped in sports history, surrounded by parks and full of culture. Situated a mile west of downtown Canton, parks with walking trails and wildlife and an array of restaurants and shopping spots are nearby for residents and visitors alike. Residential streets are the minority in Edmeyer Park, as commercial property and museums occupy much of the space. Houses tend to be at least 50 years old, and some have lawns and garages, but others are perched along streets with cracked asphalt-over-brick pavement. Interstate 77 runs through the neighborhood, keeping Edmeyer Park connected to Canton and beyond.

Homes around Edmeyer Park

Closer to the Hall of Fame, homes tend to have garages and driveways, but those located south of the McKinley Museum sometimes have parking on the side or in rear alleys. Some older residences offer street parking as the only option. Though some neighborhood streets have narrow sidewalks, most residents get around by car. Homes here date from 1900 to 1970, with Foursquares, brick ranch-style and raised ranch-style houses the most prevalent. Prices range from $70,000 to $250,000, but some two-bedroom houses that need repairs have recently sold for as little as $40,000.

A park here, a park there

Stadium Park is the biggest, with a pond to the north and the tree-lined West Branch Nimishillen Creek cutting through its green expanse. This park has sports courts, fishing, walking trails and pavilions for gathering with friends and family. “The gardens in Stadium Park are amazing in summer. There is someone there every day weeding or watering,” says Colleen Cochran, who works for Canton Parks and Recreation. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is a museum dedicated to the greats of professional football, welcoming millions of visitors a year. Right next door is the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, home to the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game and the McKinley High Bulldogs. Other neighborhood attractions include the McKinley Memorial Park and McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. Memberships to the McKinley Museum allow locals to visit the Discovery World Science Center in addition to the presidential history exhibits. The Football Hall of Fame is also building an indoor water park within its new village.

Fine dining and casual bars

Though parks and museums are just steps away, grocery stores may require a bus or car ride. A couple of markets are located within a mile of the neighborhood, and the Giant Eagle Grocery Store is about 2 miles away. The Hall of Fame Village has four restaurants, including Don Shula’s American Kitchen, a casual spot with a sleek, modern feel -- itself inspired by the Hall of Fame coach of the Baltimore Colts and the Miami Dolphins. Jenna Jeffery, sales and marketing intern with Canton Visitor’s Center, recommends Bender’s Tavern for special occasions or to impress out-of-town guests. “They fly in fresh seafood daily,” says Jeffery. Setting foot in this tavern is like stepping into an early 1900s saloon with its tiger oak paneling, marble floors and dim, warm lighting. Located 1 mile east of Edmeyer Park, this famous tavern is also known as the birthplace of the National Football League as the founders discussed its creation here.

Events in Centennial Plaza

The city of Canton holds events throughout the year. Residents can go to Centennial Plaza, 1 mile east, to watch movies on Wednesday nights throughout the summer. There is also a farmer’s market near Centennial Plaza on Saturdays from May through October. Entertainment is planned for the first Friday of every month, and at the end of November, there is an annual Light Up Downtown celebration.

Canton City Schools graded with Bs and Cs

The Canton City School District serves the residents of Edmeyer Park. Students can begin their education at Worley Elementary, which scores a B on Niche. They can continue their education at Crenshaw Middle School, which rates a C-minus and allows students to accelerate their learning by signing up for high school classes such as Spanish and physical science. McKinley High School, which receives a C rating, offers six Advanced Placement courses. McKinley is also known as the alma mater for several former NFL players and coaches, such as Garland Rivers and Wayne Fontes.

Getting to and from Edmeyer Park

Downtown Canton is less than 1 mile east of Edmeyer Park. The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) stops along Broad Avenue and Wertz Avenue once per hour from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. There are bike lanes along Washington Boulevard Northwest and West Branch Trail, as well as some in-progress on-road bike routes leading from Edmeyer Park to downtown that have yet to be completed. Regarding interstate traffic, Jeffery says, “I don’t have any problems getting on and off I-77.” The Akron-Canton Airport is about 9 miles north. Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital is located within the neighborhood on Mercy Drive Northwest.

Hall of Fame Village expansion may increase traffic

Cochran mentioned that development is underway for the Football Hall of Fame Village to build an indoor water park, which is expected to open in 2025. This may cause a noticeable increase in tourism down the line.
