A tiny Canton neighborhood defined by walkability
Canton, Ohio is a little off the beaten path, but its many neighborhoods means a lot of variety from block to block. One such community is O’Jays Parkway, which is flanked by two parks and bisected by a creek. Each of these areas is walkable, with restaurants and schools not much farther from any given home. Residents of this little suburb have plenty of excuses to come together, thanks to Canton’s packed event calendar and impressive number of museums.
Keeping busy in O'Jays Parkway
No matter the season, Canton residents have something to do. This includes artsy gatherings like paint and sips, tots ‘n’ pots and animal portrait workshops. Canton also offers more than one museum, and a variety at that. There’s the Canton Museum of Art, which got its own building in 1941 to showcase its collection of Ohio artists’ and local high schoolers’ works. Football fans rush to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton for its display of memorabilia and busts of famous players.

Simple, affordably priced homes
Most of the homes in O’Jays Parkway are clustered west of the Nimishillen Creek’s bank. Narrow streets and sidewalks feature the occasional mature tree, with just enough room to street park. Small lots measure less than one tenth of an acre, displaying two- and three-bedroom worker’s cottages. These typically sell for between $40,000 and $100,000, but of the 150 or so homes in the neighborhood’s inventory, few come on the market each year.

Getting outdoors (in any direction)
Nimishillen Creek passes through the neighborhood, punctuated by a park at both its north and south ends. Residents can walk north to Nimisilla Park for an afternoon on the playground, relaxing on the grass or playing on the outdoor chess sets. A half mile walk south along the creek terminates with Riverside Park, which has a dedicated dugout and plenty of wide-open space for other sports. The creek itself is home to mostly smallmouth bass, making it great for amateur anglers in the neighborhood.

Grabbing a bite close to Downtown Canton
Locally owned restaurants and bars occupy every block within a quarter mile radius near Tuscarawas Street. Deli Ohio is a well-known go-to for a quick sandwich, just as Arcadia Grille comes recommended for its Italian dishes. There are also various cafes and bars providing a morning boost or an evening wind-down. StarkFresh Grocery Store is the closest for weekly needs.

Utilizing the SARTA
Residents of O’Jays Parkway are quite close to Downtown Canton, so close in fact that a bus ride takes as little time as a drive. Residents can utilize the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority for a 1-mile, 6-minute trip downtown. The nearest medical facility is Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, located 3 miles west. A drive there takes about 10 minutes by car, whereas a bus ride lasts 30 minutes.

Students in O’Jays Parkway can attend Gibbs Elementary, before moving to Crenshaw Middle. Canton Harbor High rounds out the list with an employment opportunities program called Ohio Means Jobs. Each schools gets an overall grade of C-minus from Niche.

Crime and lead emissions in O'Jays Parkway
According to the CAP Index, crime in O’Jays Parkway is higher than the national average. The neighborhood scores an eight out of 10, while the national average is a four out of 10. In July 2021, residents of Canton, Ohio’s Ward 4 objected to the airborne lead emissions caused by local company Republic Steel. After a town meeting attended by an EPA official, Republic Steel was ordered by a Stark County judge to alter their course or face step fines.
