Somewhere between city life and country living
Poised between Canton and cornfields, Outer Canton connects the city limits to the fringes of rural countryside. “You can go just a half-mile one way, and you’re in Canton. If you drive a half-mile the other way, you’re in farmland,” says Jen Adams, a second-generation co-owner of Smith’s Waco Market. Along State Route 43, small businesses and homes dot the roadside, giving way eventually to corn and soybean fields as the road winds south. Along the way, Esmont Park and Trail provides natural views and bird-watching, while Smith’s serves home-cooked meals and ice cream. “Our neighbors are all family. They come by to chat and get a can of pop,” Adams says.
Ranch-style homes and bungalows dot the countryside
Homes sit along semi-rural roads cutting through the wooded countryside. Houses to the north tend to have a more suburban feel, while the south features a more rural layout with homes fewer and farther between. Architectural styles include bungalows, farmhouses, minimal traditional homes, ranch-style and Cape Cods. Prices range from $30,000 to $80,000 for homes needing renovation, while turn-key homes tend to go for $100,000 to $350,000.

Smith’s Waco Market for a home-cooked meal
Smith’s Waco Market is a community landmark. “My parents purchased a small produce stand in 1976. We have added on twice, and now we carry a full line of groceries— sourced from Ohio as much as possible,” Adams says. “We also serve homemade cafeteria-style food like macaroni, chicken noodle soup and enchiladas.” Locals can also browse over 100 dealer booths at The Station Antiques and Uniques. Located in a red brick building on a rural roadside, The Station sells vintage items like glassware, gas and oil memorabilia and antique furniture. Adams says that for most shopping, “people usually head into Canton; it’s about 10 to 15 minutes to Belden Village Mall.” Though the neighborhood is mostly residential, the community is bordered by thoroughfares lined with restaurants and businesses. El Campero is a popular spot serving traditional Mexican food while also offering happy hour and vegetarian dishes. Opened in 1947, Aunt Mary Ann Donuts Café is a family-owned restaurant with a hometown vibe. Though doughnuts are the café's main draw, the menu also offers breakfast sandwiches along with traditional and specialty coffee drinks. The Outer Canton location is one of five for the growing family business.
