The Souers District was once part of a thriving industrial section of Canton in its southwest corner due mainly to its numerous railroad tracks. While reminders of the city's manufacturing prowess are still present, it's better known now as the birthplace of the National Football League. "The Pro Football Hall of Fame is Canton's whole identity," says Landon Franklin, a Canton native and employee with Bill's Books and More. "But you also have downtown close by, which really has it all." Technically, Canton is very urban; however, it has plenty of green spaces and neighbors much of Ohio's Amish country in the southwest, like Holmes and Wayne.
Souer's diverse price range
Broken sidewalks line mostly one- and two-story frame or brick homes. There's a wide gap in the price range of housing in Souers. Most homes average between $75,000 and $100,000, with a few priced much lower and some reaching the low $200,000s, which commonly offer slightly bigger lots, updated appliances and recent renovations.

Parks with historic value and unique to Canton
Garaux Park, operated by Canton Parks and Recreation, sits on the Souers neighborhood's west end and includes a walking trail, baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, pavilions and restrooms. Meyers Lake is just off Thirteenth Street and a local favorite for fishing alongside Tim's Tavern, a notable seafood spot just a few blocks away. In comparison, the interconnected park system that includes Stadium Park, Westbrook Veterans Memorial Park, City Field Park and Arboretum Park is a more popular choice for outdoor recreation, offering multiple ponds, sports courts and walking trails near the McKinley Memorial and Museum and the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Several country clubs are north of Souers, like Brookside Country Club and Shady Hollow Country Club. For families, Clay's Resort Jellystone Park provides amusement park fun 17 miles northwest. When the weather's poor, golfing enthusiasts can take a swing at virtual golf at the 1899 Indoor Golf Bar. The J. Babe Stearn Center is a few blocks west of the neighborhood and provides numerous recreational leagues for youths and adults.
Downtown Canton's Strip
Grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants and pubs like Harmon's dot the neighborhood along Lincoln Highway. Locals can find Johnnie's Bakery, a Walmart Supercenter, Giant Eagle Supermarket and Heggy's Nut Shop. "Athens Restaurant is a great little local spot," Franklin recommends. "It's got a quirky charm when you walk in." The Souers district is just minutes from downtown Canton's strip, with restaurants, bars and shops. Locals are allowed to consume alcohol in publicly designated spaces in Canton, so nightlife can get a little rowdy after a football game. "There are multiple great toy stores here and Freedom Hobby and Gaming, a great little gaming spot for Dungeons and Dragons and other games," Franklin says. Belden Village is 5 miles away, serving as Canton’s most frequented shopping center.

Eerie events at Canton Palace Theatre
"The Canton Palace Theatre is the oldest theatre in Canton, I believe," Franklin says. "For Halloween, they'll do a ghost tour. They've got anime and monster festivals if that's your thing." In addition to the beloved Stark County Fair every summer, the Stark County Fairgrounds host concerts, auto shows, home and garden shows, demolition derbies and more year-round, north of Souers. And life in Souers isn't the same without a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, located just a short drive north along I-77. Every August, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week includes two parades, the NFL Hall of Fame Game and the Concert for Legends.
Easy access to the highway no matter which direction you are headed.
