Life’s a beach in Cape Neddick

Along the shores of York, Cape Neddick’s coastal community rides the northern Atlantic crest. While Kittery is Maine’s southernmost point, Cape Neddick illustrates the essence of the state’s scenic coastal regions. “Not to denigrate Kittery, but Kittery doesn’t have the beaches,” says Margaret Mitchell, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Yorke Realty. “We’re the first big beach town along the corridor. It’s a nice entrance to the southern seacoast of Maine.” The area explodes with tourists and seasonal residents in the summertime, when its population triples. Those who live here year-round can dive into the pleasures of life in a small Maine community. “Locals go into hibernation in the summer, then come out in full force when the crowds die down,” Mitchell says.

The Long and Short beach story

The sister beaches of Long Sands and Short Sands earn top marks from locals. Long Sands is a no-frills beach perfect for relaxing with a book or strolling in the shallow surf. Short Sands is smaller but includes a cute promenade with shops and arcades to amuse the kids. “Long Sands Beach goes on forever with that long stretch of sand,” Mitchell says. “Short Sands has a lot of kid-friendly activities, so it attracts more families. But you can easily walk between the two of them.”

Capes, Colonials and cottages

“In general, Maine has an older housing stock, but builds are more modern here compared to northern parts of the state,” Mitchell says. “There’s a large increase of new construction in the area. Everybody wants to own a piece of southern Maine.” A mixture of capes, Colonials, and new Craftsman-style builds speckles the shoreline. Narrow roads lined with wild rosebushes wind atop rocky bluffs and swaths of pebbled beach. Moving inland toward Interstate 95, the area is densely wooded, with properties spaced widely apart. There are plenty of seasonal cottages in Cape Neddick and a few condo developments grouped along the beach. Smaller homes and condos sell for $500,000 to $600,000, while grand oceanfront estates average $2 to $4 million.

Schooling on the Coastal Ridge

Most kids who live in Cape Neddick year-round will go to Village Elementary and Coastal Ridge Elementary before heading to York Middle School. Village Elementary gets a B-minus from Niche, while Coastal Ridge and York Middle Schools each get an A-minus. Next comes York High School, which gets a B-minus. Parents should note that senior residents comprise the bulk of Cape Neddick’s population, so it might be tough for kids to find neighbors their age.

Small plates and Stonewall Kitchen

During summer, the sound of cracking lobster claws can be heard up and down Coastal Route 1. Plenty of York’s seasonal restaurants feature this Maine delicacy, but the globally-inspired cuisine at Walkers Maine and the addictive small plates at Central Restaurant & Bar are bigger draws for Cape Neddick residents. When it’s time to stock the cupboards, there’s a Hannaford supermarket across Route 1 in York. Along the way, shoppers can pop into Stonewall Kitchen for Maine-made sauces, pastas and dessert mixes to complement their meals.

Fireworks and festive Fridays

Every August, fireworks illuminate the sky above Short Sands Beach to celebrate York Days. The festivities last a week and include a 5K race, a beachside movie and a special lighting of the picturesque Nubble Lighthouse. On Friday nights throughout the rest of the summer, live musicians take the stage at the Ellis Park bandstand, which is also at Short Sands.

Corridor to the coast

Cape Neddick residents can hop onto Route 1 to access the other picturesque Maine towns that dot the coast, with York to the south and Ogunquit to the north. “There’s an easy flow from York to Ogunquit and Wells,” Mitchell says. The excitement of Portland is 45 miles north via Interstate 95, the artery that also connects Maine to the southern New England states.

Going wild at York’s

Aside from the Nubble Head Lighthouse, Cape Neddick’s main draw is York’s Wild Kingdom. This family-friendly zoo and amusement park draws tourists and residents from all over Maine from Memorial Day through late September.
