Carl Junction is a quiet, small southeast Missouri city of 8,000 located 8 miles north of Joplin. The city has a charming downtown area, a top-rated school district and various neighborhoods. Carl Junction has a subdivision to suit different budgets and lifestyle preferences. Two grocery stores — Walmart Neighborhood Market and Harps Food Store — are off Demott Drive. There are a few local eateries, including Joe’s 19th Hole off the golf course in Brairbrook.

Annual Carl Junction Bluegrass Festival each September
The Carl Junction Bluegrass Festival has been held on the last Saturday in September at Center Creek Park since 1997. The annual event brings more than 10,000 to the park for a day of free music, local vendors, food and drink opportunities, a bounce house and of course live Bluegrass music on the pavilion stage.
Missouri State Route 171 leads to Joplin
State Route 171 runs through Carl Junction, offering an easy beginning to the commute to Joplin, 15 minutes away and Pittsburg, Kansas, 30 minutes away. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Criminal Justice Information Services, violent crime increased from 2022 to 2023. During the same period, burglary and motor vehicle theft rose, while larceny declined.
Tornadoes are common in this part of Missouri, and Carl Junction is no exception, with twisters touching down in 2003 and 2019. Residents are prepared with basements, purchased shelters or the storm shelter at Carl Junction High School. "We sell a lot of storm shelters,” Sneed says. “Homeowners can bolt them and drill them into the ground either in garages or outside."
