A family-friendly suburb near Pittsburgh International Airport
About 20 miles northwest of Downtown Pittsburgh, Carnot-Moon is a little suburb between the Ohio River and Pittsburgh International Airport. Whether they come to the area by land, air or water, residents describe this tucked-away community on the edge of the city as a quiet, tight-knit place to raise kids. “I’ve lived everywhere from San Diego to D.C., but this is such a great little area to grow up in,” says Albert Quaye, an area native who serves on the township’s board of supervisors. Mary Jo Wise, another member of the Moon Township Board of Supervisors, agrees: “It’s a very family-oriented place, so there are lots of parents who make that effort to connect, whether that’s through school activities or youth sports.” Highly rated Moon Area Schools, robust nearby parks and direct Interstate 376 access all make Carnot-Moon a good fit for many Pittsburgh-area families.

Late 20th century suburbs and new construction townhouses
Most homes in Carnot-Moon were built in the 1960s and ‘70s, and a large proportion are ranch-style and split-level homes. “A lot of the houses on the street I grew up on are still occupied by the original owners or by people who have lived there for 20 years,” Quaye says. Some developments from the ‘90s onward comprise brick-and-vinyl New Traditional homes, and new townhouse communities continue to be built. The median price for a single-family home is around $335,000, lower than the national median but higher than the Pittsburgh median. Townhouses sell at a median price of $200,000. Homes spend an average of 56 days on the market, which is slightly longer than the national average of 45 days.

Summer concerts and Fourth of July fireworks at Moon Park
Most of Moon Township’s recreational facilities are just east of Carnot-Moon, including the township’s flagship park, Moon Park. “Our parks are one of our best-kept secrets,” Wise says. “We have one of the most popular Fourth of July fireworks displays in the area at Moon Park. People come from West Virginia to see it.” Summer concerts are held at the park’s amphitheater, and a recently renovated playground and splash pad is popular with families. Various multi-use fields host youth games on the weekends, while tennis courts, basketball courts and pickleball courts are open for weeknight practices. At the heart of the 300-acre park is Nelson Pond, a small, scenic spot to fish or have a picnic.
Numerous private and public golf courses surround Carnot-Moon, including Montour Heights Country Club, Moon Golf Club and Scally’s Golf Center. “Before it was really developed, Moon was known as the golf course area of western Pennsylvania,” Quaye says.

Chain shopping and local dining on University Boulevard
Shopping centers line University Boulevard and Beaver Grade Road, anchored by big-box brands and supermarkets such as Walmart and Giant. Local and chain restaurants dot the strip malls, including Pittsburgh cuisine classics such as Primanti Bros. Restaurant and Bar and Forgotten Taste Pierogies. One Carnot-Moon favorite is Dependable Drive-In Theater, a nostalgic outdoor cinema that screens blockbusters and other new releases. More shopping, including the Mall at Robinson, can be found at the junction of Interstate 376 and Pennsylvania Route 60, about 5 miles down the road.

To the north, Pennsylvania State Route 51 runs east where it connects to Interstate 79. For a car-free ride into the city, Port Authority has a park-and-ride stop along University Boulevard that provides service to Downtown Pittsburgh. The nearest hospital, Heritage Valley Sewickley, is about 5 miles away across the Ohio River.
Frequent fliers have convenient access to Pittsburgh International Airport, which borders Carnot-Moon and is a major driver of the local economy. “Personally, I love watching the planes,” Quaye says. “There might be some places where they fly right over your house, and others where you don’t notice them at all.” The airport is currently undergoing construction on a new terminal, expected to open in 2025, as part of its modernization initiative to increase efficiency.
