Lanark Village is a quiet retreat on Florida's Forgotten Coast
Lanark Village is a quiet community set along the waterfront on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. The village began in the late 19th century and was a popular resort until it was taken over by the U.S. Army during World War II and used to train soldiers for amphibious warfare, including D-Day. The community, which caters to retirees but includes a variety of residents, is anchored by the cottage-style row housing that was converted from military barracks once the war ended. Today, residents enjoy an affordable coastal retreat with easy access to outdoor adventures. “Lots of fishing and on-the-water activities. It’s an Old Florida-style of living,” says Kathleen Bouchelle of Anchor Realty Florida, who has sold several village properties.
Converted military barracks anchor attractively-priced housing options
Cozy, colorful homes stand out among the attached single-family housing in the heart of the community. The rows of homes are oriented so that they face each other and not the street. They are separated by walkways. “A lot of people who live there are local, single and elderly,” Bouchelle says. “They’re small units close to the water.” Smaller traditional designs, manufactured and ranch-style homes on larger lots were added as the community expanded over the years. Newly built model homes can also be found.
Multi-level coastal designs built with severe weather in mind stand out among waterfront properties along Apalachicola Bay. Piers and boat slips are popular backyard amenities. Prices range from under $100,000 for the attached homes to around $700,000 for bayfront homes, although new construction on the water can sell for $1 million-plus. “It’s not like Destin or Pensacola, where you have lots of multimillion-dollar homes on the water,” Bouchelle says. “There’s a lot of construction, so prices are going up steadily, but you can count on your fingers the number of million-dollar homes in this area.” Residents should be aware that insurance rates are likely to be affected by the high risk of flooding and wind damage during hurricane season.
Activities revolve around the water, community gatherings
Being minutes, if not steps, away from Apalachicola Bay is a major attraction for all residents, as the coastal waters are a haven for boaters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Bay also connects residents to the nearby open waters of the Gulf. Nearby Carrabelle Beach is a popular destination. Closer to home, residents enjoy several recreational amenities, including a boat club where residents can store their vessels and socialize among the nautical-minded, and a 9-hole golf course. The Lanark Village Association hosts community events and social gatherings at Chillas Hall. These include bingo, game nights and potlucks. The community’s American Legion Post is another popular gathering place.
Stores and restaurants in Carrabelle, Apalachicola
Route 98 Diner at Putnal Lanark Station is a popular Old Florida eatery that serves up comfort food favorites. Crooked River Grill is a contemporary restaurant at the nearby St. James Bay Golf & Pickleball Resort. Nearby downtown Carrabelle’s commercial district offers shopping and dining options. “It’s only a 10-minute drive,” says Bouchelle, who adds that the community is basically an extension of Carrabelle. “There’s not a lot of retail and restaurants, so a lot of times people will drive to Apalachicola, which has more local shops and eateries.”
Single school serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade
The community is served by a single, consolidated school under the direction of the Franklin County School District, which is rated C-minus by Niche. The Franklin County School, which earns a C from Niche, serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is located in Eastport, about 20 miles from the community.
U.S. Route 98 connects residents to local points of interest
U.S. Route 98, which runs along the coast, provides easy access in and out of this car-dependent community. George E. Weems Memorial Hospital, the closest full-service medical center, is about 30 miles away via Route 98. Tallahassee, the state capital, is about 50 miles north via nearby U.S. Route 319. The panhandle’s largest city is home to Tallahassee International Airport. The community's CAP Index score is 1-out-of-10, signifying an area with the lowest possible crime rate.
