Carrboro is a progressive town of around 21,500 residents in North Carolina’s Triangle Region. The area is pedestrian friendly, allowing residents to walk or bike through Downtown Carrboro to visit art galleries, organic markets and locally owned businesses. “The way Carrboro is situated, you can kind of seamlessly walk through downtown Chapel Hill to Carrboro and not really know that you're in Downtown Carrboro,” says Maggie Funkhouser, Market Manager at the Carrboro Farmers' Market. “I wonder when people move here if they think that Carrboro is a neighborhood when it's actually its own small town.” Carrboro is less than 2 miles from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
Lower median prices than Chapel Hill
Colorful bungalows and ranch-style homes are common architectural styles. The median single-family home price is around $630,000, compared to the neighboring city, Chapel Hill, which is $750,000. Townhouses in Carrboro have a median price of $320,000, while Chapel Hill’s median is around $495,000. Houses tend to stay on the market for an average of 19 days, selling faster than the national average of 45 days. Downtown Carrboro has no recently sold homes, and none are currently for sale. Lake Hogan Farms is a master-planned community of 400 homes ranging from $455,000 to $1,750,000. Houses in Outlying Carrboro start at $195,000 and go as high as $3.6 million.
A-plus Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools scores an A-plus on Niche and is ranked the No. 1 Best School District in North Carolina. They serve over 11,000 students, and families can enter a lottery system to attend schools with magnet programs, like the Spanish and English dual language program offered in four schools at the elementary and middle level. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is within walking distance from Downtown Carrboro. It also earns an A-plus and is considered one of the top public universities in the country. “It's pretty common for UNC grads to stick around or move here for grad school,” Funkhouser says.
Fishing at Anderson Community Park
Some residents have quick access to outdoor recreation areas. “From my house, I have four parks within biking distance,” Funkhouser says. The Bolin Creek Greenway is a paved trail that runs for 2.5 miles but will be extended in the next few years. The town’s biggest green space, Anderson Community Park, has 55 acres with multiple sports fields and courts. It also has an over 2-acre pond for fishing. The town offers recreation programs, including an adult walking group. A library in Carrboro is coming soon. “Chapel Hill has a library, but Carrboro didn't. So, now we're getting this really big new library,” Funkhouser says.
Unique shops and eateries at Carr Mill Mall
Transformed from a cotton mill, Carr Mill Mall is home to unique locally owned shops and eateries, like Mulberry Silks and Fine Fabrics. “When people visit, one thing people sometimes bring up to me is, ‘Oh, this type of store doesn't really exist anywhere else,’” Funkhouser says. Weaver Street Market is a local co-op with a hot bar that also serves as a social gathering spot. “It’s a very popular spot for people to sit outside and get lunch or a snack,” Funkhouser says. “One time I heard it called Carrboro's Front Porch. They serve alcohol, so sometimes on Friday or Saturday nights, people will be out here with a beverage, hanging out, especially when it's nice outside.”
Eating local with Carrboro Farmers’ Market
Residents can check out the Carrboro Farmers’ Market year-round or see a live performance at Cats Cradle, a long-running, intimate venue with a capacity of 750 people. Carrboro Day is an annual event with live music and food trucks. With a strong commitment to the arts, the town holds several festivals celebrating local talent. Creators can participate in the Carrboro Music Festival or the Carrboro Film Festival. In the spring, the town closes down Weaver Street to open the road for bikers, walkers and runners for the Carrboro Open Streets event. It was created by The Carrboro Bicycle Coalition.
Free public transit and Interstates 40 and 80 provide commuter routes
Carrboro is located just off Interstate 40, which intersects with Interstate 85. Downtown Durham is about 15 miles northeast. Without a car, there are many paths and trails to get around Carrboro on foot or bike. “Libba Cotten Bikeway a relatively short bike path that goes from Carrboro to a road that leads into campus,” Funkhouser says. “It's really pretty. It goes past the train tracks.” Chapel Hill Transit provides free bus service. The long buses are wrapped with photos from the community and the slogan “You Couldn’t Make This Place Up.” The town’s public parking is also free.
Crime
Carrboro has no current crime data. The Carrboro Police Department has a liaison that works specifically with the LGBTQ community.
