Greater Portland area suburb close to premier shopping
Sunnyside is a Clackamas County community that shares borders with the suburban city of Happy Valley. The community is located right along Interstate 205, which combines with the nearby MAX Green Line to give residents a few ways to directly access the Rose City located about a dozen or so miles north. But other than for maybe employment reasons, residents of this part of Clackamas County don’t need to travel that far to find suitable shopping, dining, recreation and other needs. Southeast Sunnyside Road passes by two shopping centers within the community — the Sunnyside Plaza and Sunnyside Marketplace — as well as the Clackamas Town Center located just outside of the neighborhood’s bounds. Residents here are also surrounded by parks and green spaces, include both Mount Talbert Nature Park and several other spots in nearby Happy Valley. On weekend adventures, they can find themselves exploring the conifer dense woodlands, where they might stumble upon a hidden waterfall or spot a long-abandoned and rusted vehicle from the early 1900s amid the shrubs and moss-covered trunks. Or they might reach a clearing and get a distant view of snow-capped Mt. Hood. Otherwise, typical days in the neighborhood see residents out on walks, others jogging and children shooting hoops in their driveways. “Sunnyside is no doubt a desirable place to settle down as the area offers a little bit of everything,” says Stephanie Warneke, Happy Valley’s Communications and Public Relations Coordinator. “Shops, offices and just about every amenity you could want are only a quick trip away, yet the residential neighborhoods are tranquil and family focused. Sunnyside could be described as a tight-knit community, where families and friends can gather to support local schools, businesses and community events.”

Shop at the Clackamas Town Center
Nearby dining and shopping options can be found in a few places. Right outside the neighborhood bounds off Interstate 205 is the Clackamas Town Center, which has long been a regional shopping destination and has over the years been ranked as among the top malls in the greater Portland area. The mall, which has 170 stores, includes chains like the Cheesecake Factory and the all-ages arcade Dave & Buster’s, as well as the Cinemark Clackamas Town Center and XD. A little north of the mall is a WinCo Foods and Trader Joe’s for grocery shopping. The area around the Sunnyside Marketplace on the east end of the neighborhood offers dining and shopping options. Residents can find rice bowls, wraps and salads at vegetarian-friendly regional chain Cafe Yumm! Or they can grab a cafe bombon and Belgian waffle topped with whip cream, powdered sugar and strawberries at Elka Bee’s Coffee Haus. Farther east on Southeast Sunnyside Road is the Happy Valley Station Food Carts pod.

Explore the forest at Mount Talbert Nature Park
Mount Talbert Nature Park is one of the main outdoor recreational destinations in this part of Clackamas County. Located near the heart of Sunnyside, the more than 220-acre space features picnic facilities and a 4-mile trail network that winds through an old-growth forest and includes a path to the summit. Mount Talbert is the largest in a group of extinct volcanoes and lava domes found across the east side of this region. There’s a strong chance that park visitors, along the way, will spot migrating deer and birds like the pileated and hairy woodpecker, white-breasted nuthatch and Western tanager. For something indoors, there’s the North Clackamas Aquatic Park located just west of Sunnyside. Visitors there can have fun in the wave pool or barrel down the water slides. They can also take a short break from the water and try out the climbing wall.
