Cass offers forested seclusion just minutes from Pottsville
Cass is a rural Schuylkill County township spanning roughly 14 square miles of Pennsylvania coal country. “It’s a very rural and very nice area,” says Realtor Jill Saunders with Saunders Real Estate, who has sold many homes in the area. “The people are kind, salt-of-the-earth kind of people.” Scenic hiking trails wind through this forested community of about 2,000 people, as does the West Branch Schuylkill River and several tributaries. A state park and wildlife sanctuary are nearby. Despite its country seclusion, Cass has convenient access to big-box retailers, grocery stores and restaurants in Pottsville, about 6 miles away. Interstate 81 runs along the northern edge of the area and offers direct drives to destinations like Wilkes-Barre. The I-81 area is also home to distribution centers for major companies like Wegmans Food Markets, Dollar General and Tyson Foods.
Cass offers wooded trails and access to regional attractions
Miles of wooded trails run across the countryside. There are also two playgrounds, in Heckscherville and Forestville. The Big Diamond Speedway features an over 3-mile oval clay track, a weekly destination for racing fans from spring to fall. Beyond the township, residents have access to several outdoor and recreational areas. Locus Lake and Tuscarora state parks, roughly 20 miles away, offer scenic settings for hiking, swimming, fishing, boating and camping. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, about 24 miles away, attracts bird watchers who can view the raptors from scenic overlooks. About 9 miles away, the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine celebrates the area’s history, as visitors travel 1,800 feet into Mahanoy Mountain in a coal car and tour the mine.
Housing ranges from fixer-uppers to spacious rural properties
In some areas, detached and attached rowhouses sit close to their neighbors on sidewalk-lined streets. In other parts of town, Colonial Revival, New Traditional and ranch-style houses line heavily forested two-lane roads. Potential buyers can find a property needing significant repairs for under $100,000. Move-in-ready rowhouses can range from $100,000 to $230,000, and larger properties with some land can cost $300,000 to $470,000.
