Cowlitz County neighborhood with plenty of outdoor recreation

Silver Lake is a rural neighborhood 8 miles west of Castle Rock. “It’s only 5 miles off the freeway. So many buyers move here from out of state, with one kid or grandkid in Seattle, and one in Portland. It’s a common place for retired people to move into,” says Darla Brown, Realtor at Windermere Northwest Living with over 30 years of real estate experience. While it’s not a destination for shopping or dining, this scenic lakeside community offers something a bit more unique: views of Mount St. Helens.

Spending the day by the lake

The lake welcomes a variety of recreational activities, from wakeboarding to swimming to boating. One way to access the water is from the boat ramp at Seaquest State Park. From this 475-acre park, folks can admire the snowcapped Mount St. Helens in the distance. Within the park, Mt. Saint Helens Interpretive Center offers a way to learn about the area’s geological history for those who don’t want to drive up closer to Washington’s famous active volcano, 37 miles east.

Shopping and dining outside the neighborhood

Silver Lake contains no shopping or dining options. “While it is a very rural community and it feels off-grid, you’re really only 20 minutes from Vancouver and major shopping along the I-5 corridor,” Purdy says. Parker’s Steakhouse & Brewery in Castle Rock serves burgers, brews and cocktails in a casual atmosphere. Shoppers can head to Drew’s Grocery & Service in Toutle or browse a larger selection at Cascade Select Market in Castle Rock.
