Cedar Grove offers small-town charm with Dutch influence

Cedar Grove was originally settled by Dutch immigrants in the 1840s, a heritage the community still celebrates. Today, the village maintains a welcoming, small-town charm with a small Main Street district, youth sports leagues and highly rated schools. “It’s a very friendly, neighborly community with deep roots,” says Dawn Kronfrot, a local real estate agent at Redefined Realty Advisors with about 10 years of experience. “A lot of the people who have lived there stay there, and now they’re raising their own family. There’s a really good quality of life.” Located on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan, Cedar Grove has a commuter-friendly location on Interstate 43.

Single-family homes, condos and some lakefront properties

The housing inventory includes a mix of Victorian-era homes, Craftsman cottages, midcentury ranch-style properties and New Traditional bungalows from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Many properties sit on spacious quarter-acre lots with mature maple and oak trees shading well-maintained sidewalks and manicured front lawns. Home prices range from $230,000 to $480,000. Some older homes have been converted into duplexes, and several single-story condo complexes are dotted around the area. Prices for a condo or duplex range from $190,000 to $360,000. Large custom estates line the shores of Lake Michigan, often on lots larger than a full acre. These properties rarely go on the market, though recent sales went for around $1.9 million.

Neighborhood parks and sandy beaches on Lake Michigan

Memorial Park has a playground, picnic pavilion and a small replica of a Dutch windmill. Independence Park also has a playground, as well as tennis and sand volleyball courts. The Cedar Grove Sports Complex hosts youth soccer and Little League games, while the Sauk Trail Conservation Club runs adult and high school trap shooting leagues. Amsterdam Park is located east of Cedar Grove, offering sandy dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan. The park is bordered by the Amsterdam Dunes Preservation Area, a county-owned nature reserve with some hiking trails. Cedar Grove is located along the Sheboygan Interurban Trail, part of a larger trail that stretches from Sheboygan to the edge of Milwaukee.

The annual Holland Festival celebrates the community’s heritage

The annual Holland Festival takes place at Memorial Park on the last weekend in July. The three-day celebration includes a car show, craft fair and a parade of kinder klossers and klompen dansers, who dance down Main Street in traditional wooden shoes.

Public schools in Cedar Grove score in the A and B range

Cedar Grove-Belgium Elementary and Middle schools are on the same campus, and both earn an A-minus from Niche. The B-plus-rated Cedar Grove-Belgium High offers classes in welding, manufacturing and architecture. High school athletic programs include football, volleyball and esports. The Cedar Grove-Belgium School District's Parent-Teacher-Student Organization hosts lots of events for students and families, including a daddy-daughter dance and a silent auction fundraiser in the winter.

Local businesses are located along Main Street

A small selection of local businesses line Main Street, including Sportsman’s Bar and Ugly Mugs coffee shop. Also on Main Street, Bada Bing Pizza has Italian food made with locally sourced ingredients. Mary’s Country Grove Restaurant is a family-owned diner, serving American fare with a weekly fish fry on Fridays. Locals shop for groceries at Piggly Wiggly.

Commuters have access to Interstate 43

Sheboygan is less than 20 miles north on Interstate 43, while Milwaukee is about 40 miles south. “Cedar Grove is right near the freeway, so it’s ideal for any kind of commuter,” Kronfrost says. Aurora Medical Center Sheboygan County is under 15 miles away. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 50 miles away.
