Large yards, diverse housing and newer condos northeast of Downtown
Bever Park, also known as Bever Woods, is an established, high-end neighborhood made up of single-family homes, condos and an amenity-filled park. The neighborhood, less than 3 miles northeast of Downtown Cedar Rapids, comprises homes from a variety of decades. Many have large yards; the median lot size is nearly 1.5 acres. And it's not unusual to find houses well over 3,500 square feet. "This is one of the few communities with prices that run close to a million," says Cory Rath, a Realtor with Keller Williams Midwest Partners, who has sold many houses here. "The homes are huge and very distinctive." Residential areas are well-kept. Wide, tree-lined streets with sidewalks are laid out in a grid pattern. It is not uncommon to see children playing or neighbors socializing outside.

Park has a petting zoo
Bever Park, the namesake green space, spans 86 acres in the heart of the neighborhood. Amenities include a playground, tennis courts, softball fields, restrooms, an ice rink and a swimming pool. The park also contains Old MacDonald's Farm, a free, century-old petting zoo showcasing farm animals and North American waterfowl. Open year-round, Indian Creek Nature Center sits southeast of the community on more than 500 acres near the junction of Indian Creek and the Cedar River. Visitors can watch birds and bees from the viewing room and see turtles in the lobby. As frogs call out from the pond, residents can explore the 146-year-old Blue Bridge or 5 miles of trails wind through woods, prairies and wetlands. Another site popular with locals is Brucemore, a 26-acre estate with a Queen Anne-style mansion, formal gardens and woodland areas. Built between 1884 and 1886, Brucemore is Iowa's only National Trust Historic Site.

Dine and play pickleball
Shopping and dining areas are close to the neighborhood's borders. Fareway Meats and Produce is less than 3 miles north. A Hy-Vee supermarket is located on the western side of U.S. Route 151. However, those living on the east side of the neighborhood may find it more convenient to drive southeast to the Hy-Vee just across Mount Vernon Road SE. Bever Park residents can drive about 4 miles north to Lindale Mall, which is anchored by a Von Maur department store. "Dining out is a popular pastime for Cedar Rapids residents, commensurate with New Yorkers," Rath says. "We're seeing more mom-and-pop eateries opening, overtaking the popularity of chain restaurants." One of Rath's favorites is the Map Room, just east of Cedar River. Open for eight years, the restaurant has the ambiance of a small Irish Pub and is known for its unique burgers and craft cocktails. With an eight-table dining room, reservations aren't accepted, says owner Christina Springman. The restaurant is open seven days a week during the summer, and the busiest times are at 6 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays. Customers Park on metered streets. Pickle Palace is both a restaurant and a space for pickleball and duckpin bowling. "This has a beautiful art deco interior with vibrant colors," Rath says. The restaurant also has a rooftop pub with wood-paneled walls, library lighting and an outdoor area.
The Bever Park community can head to Pickle Palace from some competitive pickleball games.
