A historic neighborhood, reinvigorated
With a history dating back to its founding in the 1800s, Oak Hill Jackson represents one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids. Despite its historic significance, the neighborhood was largely ignored by developers and homebuyers for years as its buildings became older and more dilapidated. However, a combination of the Iowa flood of 2008 and a citywide initiative to encourage new construction has led to an influx of new residents and a higher quality of life in recent years. Today, Oak Hill Jackson represents a balance of modern and classic style, with historic sites around every corner along with one of the most popular shopping corridors in Cedar Rapids.

New homes that blend with the historic
With its combination of new and historic homes, one could wonder if the aesthetics will clash, but the choice of designs does a good job of maintaining the area's old-fashioned look. "They really fit into the design of the original neighborhood," says Dorothy de Souza Guedes, president of the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood Association. "So it's not like you've got some modern Seattle-style home next to a 100-year-old house." Craftsman and Cape Cod styles are popular, with grid-style sidewalks passing modest, urban-style front lawns and wide open front porches. Driveways are uncommon, making street parking a necessity. Homes begin in the mid $50,000s for buildings badly in need of restoration, with well-maintained historic homes reaching into the mid-$100,000s. Modern construction and heavily renovated classic houses can make it into the high $200,000s.

Retail therapy in New Bohemia
The commercial sections of Oak Hill Jackson are where the historic truly meets the modern. "We have this older, core neighborhood that's residential," says de Souza Guedes. "And then we've got the part of town that's been developed with restaurants and breweries." New Bohemia, locally referred to as NewBo, is a prime example of this, with hip, eclectic shopping options rising out of what was once the nation's first example of a "Little Bohemia." The NewBo City Market is a massive indoor shopping bazaar, with local merchants offering everything from artisan pizza to macrame artwork to gourmet candies. Originally built in 1914 as a theater for Czech-language newsreels and films, the Ideal Theater and Bar has become one of Cedar Rapids' most popular performance venues, hosting live shows, karaoke and comedy while serving charcuterie, dessert and specialty cocktails. The Hy-Vee Grocery Store can be found a mile southwest in Taylor.

The center of Cedar Rapids' annual events
In many ways, Oak Hill Jackson is the center of the city's biggest events. "Almost everything fun or interesting that happens in Cedar Rapids happens partially or entirely in our neighborhood," says de Souza Guedes. "Most of the parades that happen in town start here or march through here." Houby Days is an annual Cedar Rapids event celebrating the Czech and Slovak cultures that are the foundation of much of the area's history. Live music, folk dancing and food fill the streets, along with games and contests. Smaller events are a regular part of life, as well. "NewBo Market does literally an event every week between April and October," says Jim Miller, executive director of The District: Czech Village and NewBo. "They do a Friday night concert, they do a Thursday night fitness event. They host so many events and cultural festivals."
