Taylor
Neighborhood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Linn County 52404
A thorough mixture of the classic and the modern
Though new homes are developed regularly, the area is best known for its turn of 20th-century architecture, including centennial-aged Cape Cods, National, American Foursquare and Craftsman-style homes. Ubiquitous sidewalks cut through modest front yards, encouraging social openness between pedestrians and neighborhood porch sitters. Driveways are uncommon, meaning street parking is the norm in most sections of town. The area's older homes are in varied states of maintenance, though many of the most dilapidated were torn down during the flood of 2008. Historical houses needing considerable restoration start in the low $50,000s, while modest-sized buildings and fixer-uppers go in the mid-$100,000s. Fully restored or more modern homes make it into the mid-$200,000s.Root for the Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium
Founded by a team of second and third-generation Czech immigrants, the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library is the largest museum dedicated to these cultures in the United States. In addition to a regular rotation of artifacts and historical exhibits, the NCSML hosts several local events, including the Old World Christmas Market. Veterans Memorial Park offers several monuments dedicated to the military and veterans found among Eastern Iowa's population. Just around the corner, locals can walk to the Veterans Memorial Stadium, which hosts minor league baseball games with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. In the neighborhood's center, Reed Park offers playground equipment, a walking trail and gently sloping fields of green space.Valedictorians from Trinity Lutheran
Iowa's open enrollment policy allows parents to choose a public school for their children, regardless of their district. Students can begin at Cedar River Academy before heading to Wilson Middle School, both of which have a C from Niche. Older students can enroll at Thomas Jefferson High School, which has a B-minus and the distinction of being one of the largest high schools in Iowa. Those considering a private education can attend Trinity Lutheran School, which serves K-8th grade and boasts an impressive collection of graduates. "We have a lot of high school valedictorians as graduates," says Jodi Jonasson, development director at Trinity Lutheran School. "We hold our students to higher expectations and standards."Kolache-eating contests at Houby Days
Named for the mushrooms the Czech and Slovak people are famed for gathering, Houby Days is an annual Cedar Rapids event celebrating the Eastern European cultures that serve as the foundation of much of the area's history. Live music from acts like the Iowa Accordion Club and Czech Plus fills the air as folk dancing gives way to tournament games and a Kolache-eating contest. Dinner on the Bridge turns the 16th Avenue Bridge of Lions into an outdoor dining experience with local food and drink and a silent auction.2 miles to downtown Cedar Rapids
Bisected by Interstate 380, trips to surrounding cities like Iowa City and Des Moines are conveniently straightforward. Downtown Cedar Rapids is just across the Cedar River, never more than 2 miles from Taylor. Public transportation is popular, and the Cedar Rapids Transit bus line offers travel all over the city at $1 a ride.Upscale shopping at Czech Village
The historic Czech Village was once the commercial district of Cedar Rapid's Czech and Slovak immigrants. Located in the only "Little Bohemia" in the United States, the riverside plaza now serves as one of the most popular shopping zones in Cedar Rapids, including restaurants and retail stores that serve up hip, eclectic tastes and fashions. "At one point, over 40% of our population had either Czech or Slovak heritage," says Jim Miller, Executive Director of the District: Czech Village and New Bohemia. "We're Bohemian in every sense of the word. Historically and culturally." The family-owned Breakfast House Café has served locals in the early hours for 30 years, offering specialty omelets and hash brown skillets in a classic diner atmosphere. The Hy-Vee Grocery and Drug Store can be found in the southern section of the neighborhood.Important to know
Cedar Rapids has a history of flooding, including the 2008 flood, which left over 10,000 people displaced and nearly 8,000 pieces of property damaged or destroyed. The city has responded with an interim flood management system that includes barriers, dam operators and a number of safety precautions as it develops and funds a permanent solution.
